Winky Wong, Ebbie Tam has spent some time in the Netherlands after she and her mother immigrated from China to help at her father’s Chinese restaurant. She’s allowed to help care for Amerigo, the horse of Sinterklaas at Tante Cor and Oom Siem, Jan Decleir’s equestrian facility, though she isn’t tall enough to ride him. On her birthday, Cor, Betty Schuurman gives her riding lessons on a pony named Naf-Naf.

At home, her mother, Hanyi Han, reveals that she is pregnant and will have a sibling for Winky. However, as the pregnancy progresses, she begins to feel sick and is later admitted to hospital due to pre-eclampsia.

At school, Winky meets Bram, Pim de Pimentel, who is fascinated with Indian culture and becomes a friend.

Sometime later, Winky goes to the equestrian facility to find Cor and Siem gone. Seizing a quiet moment, she secretly takes Amerigo for a ride. Bram arrives with his dog Winnetou, and the horse rears, causing Winky to fall. She confronts Bram, and he runs off. Realizing she could be in trouble, she tells Cor and Siem what happened, and they reassure her that Amerigo will eventually return. Her father then informs her that her mother has given birth to a girl named Ling, Naomi Sapoen.

Bram tries to talk with Winky, but she ignores him for a while. After talking with delivery driver Samir, Mamoun Elyounoussi, who has faced a similar situation when he breaks up with his girlfriend Sofie, she decides to reconcile with Bram, and he helps her in the search for Amerigo.

On the day Sinterklaas Jan Decleir and his Zwarte Pieten arrive in the village for the annual parade, Winky spots Amerigo’s red lint on a motorcycle. Sofie, Sallie Harmsen, who has reconciled with Samir, tells her that the motorcycle belongs to Oom Jacob, Eric van der Donk, a horse enthusiast. Winky chases after the bike but misses it. Samir offers her a ride to his home, and they eventually find Amerigo in Jacob’s backyard.
