Perumal, also known as Vaathiyaar, begins his journey as a humble school teacher but is soon drawn into the world of revolutionary activism after experiencing profound personal tragedy. The story opens with DSP Sunil Menon interrogating and intimidating Perumal, who has recently been arrested, while constable Kumaresan faces suspension by Ragavendar for insubordination and failing to respond to a reprimand memo, all on questionable grounds. Despite being suspended, Kumaresan is denied credit for his role in apprehending Perumal. As he prepares to return to his village with the traumatized Tamilarasi, he is unexpectedly called back by Sunil to escort Perumal through the dense jungle, a task that rekindles memories and reveals deeper layers of their intertwined histories.

During their journey, Perumal recounts his transformation from an innocent teacher into a passionate revolutionary leader fighting against social injustice. His transformation was triggered by a tragic incident involving a young farm laborer named Karuppan and his wife. Karuppan, a native from oppressed communities, endured severe exploitation under a ruthless landlord. When the landlord’s son sexually harassed Karuppan’s fiancée, Maari, Karuppan and his friends stormed into the landlord’s house to rescue her. In the ensuing chaos, Karuppan killed the landlord, an act which initially set Perumal on a different path. Perumal’s intention was to hand Karuppan and Maari over to the police for justice, but the corrupt police instead betrayed him, leading to Karuppan’s death at the hands of the landlord’s son and his men.

This event marked a pivotal moment for Perumal, transforming him from a naïve school teacher into a committed revolutionary. A mentor figure, comrade KK, played a crucial role in guiding him into politics, eventually becoming like a father to him. After an assassination attempt on KK, Perumal replaced him in efforts to organize a union at the Mahalakshmi Sugar Factory, especially after the mysterious disappearance of Comrade Rangasamy, who had also sought to organize workers.

As Perumal (adopting the alias Karuppan) begins working as a laborer at the factory, he works tirelessly to establish a union, uniting the oppressed workers against their exploiters. During this period, he also meets Mahalakshmi, who is secretly the daughter of the factory owner. Despite the class divide, Perumal and Mahalakshmi develop feelings for each other and eventually marry, adding a personal layer to his struggle for justice. The union gains momentum after the death of Rangasamy, with workers bravely fighting for their rights under Perumal’s leadership, making it difficult for landlords and factory owners to abuse them anymore.

The movement takes a darker turn when comrade KK is murdered by the factory owner, prompting Perumal to resort to violence. He forms the Makkal Padai (People’s Army) to avenge this killing, which leads to clashes with law enforcement and the group’s eventual ban. Despite setbacks, Perumal’s family — Mahalakshmi and their daughter — continue to symbolize hope and resilience as he persists in the fight for social justice.

In the present timeline of the story, the police convoy gets lost in the jungle, leading to a series of dangerous incidents. Ragavendar accidentally slips into a ravine but is rescued by Perumal, highlighting the complex relationship between the captor and the captive. During this rescue, Ragavendar confesses to shooting the driver Raghu during an earlier brutal incident, which hints at deeper layers of corruption and violence within the police force. As the convoy continues, Perumal reveals his side of a tragic event: the accidental explosion of a bomb they had planted to oppose government oppression, which resulted in the destruction of a bridge and the inevitable train crash.

Throughout the journey, Perumal demonstrates leadership and a willingness to surrender peacefully, offering to show the way back to safety. However, the Makkal Padai members stage a daring ambush to free him, leading to a tense confrontation. During this chaos, Ragavendar, driven by a mixture of guilt and suspicion, shoots Perumal in the leg, although he later tries to conceal this act as an accident. The police, eager to cover their tracks, arrest Ragavendar for his role in the killing of Raghu, while Amudan, the newly promoted officer, takes charge of the operation to recapture Perumal.

As tensions escalate, Ragavendar’s treacherous actions come to light: he kills a police officer and attempts to eliminate Perumal’s allies, revealing his true nature. In a series of violent encounters and betrayals, Perumal’s unwavering spirit remains evident as he prepares to surrender. In his final moments, he delivers an impassioned plea for peace, but Amudan shoots him point-blank, bringing his turbulent life to an end. Inspired by memories of his wife and family, Perumal summons his last strength and signs a final act of defiance with a sign of life, only to be shot again by Bala.

The story concludes with Kumaresan driving Perumal’s body back to the barracks, haunted by the sacrifices and struggles endured. As he crashes the jeep into a ravine in a final act of rebellion, Kumaresan reflects in a heartfelt letter to his mother, expressing that his fate — whether death or heroism — was driven by his desire to serve and protect the oppressed, emphasizing the enduring spirit of resilience and sacrifice that defined Perumal’s life.

This epic tale explores themes of social justice, sacrifice, and resistance, painting a vivid portrait of a man who transforms from a teacher into a revolutionary icon, fighting against tyranny at great personal cost.
