Following a severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, a Tamil family of four—Das, his wife Vasanthi, and their two sons, Nithushan (“Nithu”) and Murali (“Mulli”)—are forced to leave their homeland in Jaffna. Their escape begins in Valvettithurai, and with the help of Vasanthi’s brother, Prakash, the family manages to cross into India through Rameswaram. Their journey is fraught with peril, especially when they are caught by police officers led by A. Bhairavan but are released after the officers realize they are innocent. During this tense encounter, Nithu and Mulli, seeing an opportunity, hide their emotional distress by showing a puppy they found on the shore, pretending it is their beloved pet, hoping to appeal to Bhairavan’s compassion.

Once in India, the family, along with Prakash, makes their way to the bustling city of Chennai, where they settle in the Kesava Nagar Colony. To avoid detection and possible deportation, they hide their true identity as Sri Lankan Tamils and pass themselves off as Malayalis. The local inspector, R Raghavan, plays a crucial role in helping them find shelter by leasing a house to the family. Das finds a temporary job as a driver for his neighbor, Richard, a role that helps him make some income while trying to adapt to their new life. Despite Prakash’s warnings about maintaining a low profile due to their distinct Tamil dialect, Das and Vasanthi grow increasingly close to their neighbors, forging new bonds and beginning to feel a sense of belonging in their unfamiliar surroundings.

Meanwhile, in their homeland, tragedy strikes as a bomb blast rocks Rameswaram. The case becomes a top priority for Balwan Singh, a determined and ruthless Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP). Bhairavan’s associates consider informing Balwan about the family’s true identity, but Bhairavan, who has taken a soft spot for the family, prevents this. Evidence surfaces, including CCTV footage that shows Das disposing of waste near the blast site, which could link him to the incident, but Bhairavan intervenes to shield them, recognizing their innocence. During police questioning, Balwan Singh’s aggressive tactics come to the forefront as he severely beats a suspect, leaving him critically injured. The officer is under mounting pressure, knowing that if the suspect dies, it could escalate into a major crisis, and his quest to uncover the real perpetrators behind the bombing intensifies.

Raghavan’s daughter, Kural, has a secret romantic relationship with a visiting boyfriend. When her brother Nithu mistakenly thinks the boyfriend is a thief and detains him, Kural steps in to reveal her disapproval of her father’s infidelity and her own frustrations with her family’s upheaval. A heated conflict erupts between Das and Nithu, with the latter expressing his frustrations over their humble and challenging life in Chennai. In the process, Das admits to having discarded the family dog, which sparks a disagreement. Over time, the two characters begin to reconnect, understanding each other’s struggles and fears. Nithu, who had been heartbroken after learning his girlfriend was married to someone else, finds comfort in his family’s support.

Back in Rameswaram, the investigation into the family’s background continues as Balwan and Bhairavan trace the family through a taxi they hired. The sorrowful death of Mangaiyarkarasi, an elderly neighbor, due to the shock of her husband’s passing, prompts Das to rally the community to pay their respects during her funeral. During this gathering, Richard dismisses Das from his job temporarily but rehires him after discovering his true identity as a Sri Lankan refugee, recognizing his integrity beyond their national origins. Over time, Kural develops genuine feelings for Nithu, leading to an emotional bond between the two.

The neighborhood’s unity and compassion shine brightly during Mangaiyarkarasi’s funeral, especially when a previously troublesome youth shares how Das helped him escape a poisoning attempt linked to his struggles with Alzheimer’s in his mother. The youth, once seen as a troublemaker, expresses gratitude towards Das, recounting how he was saved from despair and substance abuse by Das’s kindness. He parts ways with a heartfelt apology and hopes for a better future abroad, specifically Dubai. This act of kindness helps repair the community’s perception of him, and the entire colony begins to see Das and his family as genuine residents, not outsiders.

As the bond of trust and friendship grows in the colony, Balwan, Bhairavan, and their team arrive unexpectedly, conducting house-to-house searches to locate Das and his family. However, when they finally reach Das’s house, Bhairavan claims they are not the family he saw earlier in Rameswaram. Frustrated, Balwan is forced to leave empty-handed due to the arrest warrant issued in connection with the blast, which was complicated by the suspect’s death. Confronting Bhairavan, Das demands answers, and Bhairavan confesses that the entire neighborhood, motivated by their kindness, refused to disclose the family’s true identity. Instead, the residents collectively spoke in their own Tamil dialect to protect and support Das’s family, revealing a collective act of compassion and solidarity. This selfless act not only safeguards the family but also profoundly influences Bhairavan, who leaves with a newfound respect for their resilience and humanity.
