In a future ravaged by chemical warfare, the Earth is split into two habitable territories: the United Federation of Britain on the British Isles and northwestern Europe, and the Colony that spans Australia. Daily life is built around the uneasy commute between these two worlds, with Colony workers traveling to the UFB aboard The Fall, a gravity elevator threading through the planet’s core. The stark disparity between the two sides has fostered a growing Resistance, labeled terrorists by the UFB, who dream of improving life for those in the Colony.

Factory worker Douglas Quaid from the Colony toils in a factory that assembles police robots, but his days are colored by unsettling dreams in which he is a secret agent partnered with a mysterious woman. He longs for a life beyond the monotonous grind, for a taste of danger and purpose. His only solace comes from his friend, Harry, who shares the same cramped existence and the same wish for something more. To escape the chasm of boredom, Quaid turns to Rekall, a company that can implant artificial memories and grant a person a new, convincing life. The idea of becoming someone else excites him, and he signs up for the most thrilling fantasy Rekall has to offer.

During the preparatory work by Rekall technician McClane, Quaid’s experience takes a sharp turn. The staff realizes that Quaid already possesses real memories of being a spy, not merely invented ones. As McClane probes Quaid’s mind, a squad of UFB police storms Rekall, killing the technicians and closing in on Quaid. In the ensuing chaos, Quaid defends himself with a coldly efficient reflex, wiping out the assault team. He escapes, but the shock of what he’s learned shakes him to the core. At home, he confronts his wife, Lori Quaid. She tries to kill him, revealing she is a UFB intelligence asset and that their marriage—kept secret from Quaid—has only been six weeks, not seven years as he had believed. The revelation rattles Quaid, yet he manages to flee with Lori’s gunfire echoing behind him.

On the run, Quaid receives a phone call from Charles Hammond, a former colleague who directs him to a safe-deposit box. Within the box, Quaid discovers a message from his own future self, directing him toward a UFB apartment. When he reaches the apartment, he is chased by Lori and her team but is saved by Melina, the woman from his dreams. While taking stock of the revolting reality around him, Quaid views another hidden recording that exposes his true identity: he is not a simple factory worker but a rogue UFB agent, known in the real world as Carl Hauser who once worked for Chancellor Cohaagen to infiltrate the Resistance before defecting. Hauser had uncovered a kill code capable of disabling an army of robots that Cohaagen intends to unleash to seize more living space for the UFB, but he was captured and memory-wiped to keep his treachery hidden. The plan to retrieve Hauser’s memory rests with the Resistance’s enigmatic leader, Matthias.

The connection to Melina runs deeper than Quaid realizes: she reveals she was Hauser’s lover before his capture, and they share scars from a past attempt on their lives, a memory reflected in Quaid’s own dreams. Yet the trio is quickly cornered by the police as well as Quaid’s old ally, Harry, who claims Quaid is still trapped in a Rekall-induced dream and that the only way out is to kill Melina. The moment is tense and blurred, but Quaid’s resolve hardens as he senses a deeper truth than dream or image.

Seeking answers, Quaid and Melina seek out Matthias, who probes Quaid’s memories in search of the kill code that could alter the balance of power. Cohaagen’s fearsome plan begins to take shape as the Resistance scrambles to stave off the robotic invasion. Hammond, who has been quietly guiding Quaid’s path, reveals himself and sacrifices his life to free Quaid from Cohaagen’s grasp. The revelation shakes Quaid to the core: the kill code could give the Resistance a critical edge, but only if the memory can be retrieved and weaponized against the robot army.

With Cohaagen pressing ahead, the Fall is loaded with a robot army and ready to crush the Colony into submission. Quaid infiltrates the vessel, placing timed explosives as he searches for Melina. He fights his way through Cohaagen’s soldiers and their mechanized force, all while racing to unlock the memory that will unleash a new path for the Colony. He and Melina manage to reclaim their freedom, driving back the soldiers as the vessel detonates and plummets underground. The Fall is destroyed, along with Cohaagen’s army, and the pair are left to watch as the shattered world around them begins to find a new balance in the wake of catastrophe.

Quaid wakes up in an ambulance, surrounded by the muffled sounds of a city beginning to chart a new course. Melina, by his side, reveals a final twist: she is a holographic disguise of Lori, and the real Lori is gone. In a tense, emotional moment, Quaid shoots the holographic Lori and returns to the real Melina, who stands beside him as news channels declare the Colony’s independence from the UFB. In a world where memory can be manipulated and truth can be buried beneath layers of deception, Quaid and Melina find a fragile hope in a hard-won victory, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit against the cold calculus of empire.
