After years of confinement, Salem makes a cold, determined break and escapes from the fortress. He slips into the dead of winter, leaving the walls behind and setting his sights on revenge. The escape marks a turning point that plunges the story back into the outside world.

Return to the family farm

Salem returns to the world outside and infiltrates the countryside. The farm is now run by his younger sisters Emmie and Ester, along with Ester's husband, Dr Anton Jenks. He watches the routines of the farm and begins to map his plan for revenge.

Salem begins framing Anton

From the shadows, Salem begins by staging a murder to look like Anton is the killer. The ploy is designed to turn suspicion away from the true culprit in Salem’s view. The seeds of his revenge start taking hold on the farmstead.

Killing Britt to tighten alibi

Salem also kills Britt, a girl who was with him on the night of the farmhand's murder and could have offered him an alibi but chose not to. The act deepens the mystery and removes potential witnesses who could complicate his narrative. The violence reinforces his grip on the plan.

Salem vanishes back to the asylum

After executing his early deeds, Salem disappears back into the shadows of the asylum. He avoids detection as the new killings begin to unfold, keeping his hands mostly clean. The escape and reentry blur the line between hunted and hunter.

Inspector begins obsessive investigation

A local police inspector becomes consumed with uncovering the truth behind the wrongful conviction and the series of killings. He pursues answers with steady resolve, grilling those involved and watching for any inconsistency. Anton insists he saw Salem at the site of Emmie’s murder, adding tension to the case.

Murder of Mr Clemens

On the next night, Salem targets the corrupt barrister Mr Clemens. Clemens is bedridden and sedated by Anton, but Salem interrupts and administers a lethal injection in Clemens’s sleep. The killing escalates the mystery and deepens the inspector’s pursuit.

Return to the farmhouse; Ester's panic

Salem makes his way back to the farmhouse and disguises his movements by seizing a coat. Ester speaks to the inspector in a state of panic, and the police depart as the tension builds. The scene sets the stage for a brutal confrontation to come.

Ester's attempted escape and death

Anton confesses; inspector heads to the asylum

Back at the asylum, Anton descends deeper into the deceit that fueled the original investigation and confesses his crime to the inspector. The inspector hurries toward the fortress, certain that the truth will finally come to light. The confession reshapes the pursuit and raises the stakes for Salem.
