The Night Visitor 2015

Salem is an inmate of a fortress-like asylum, kept under a harsh confinement after an insanity plea for a crime he didn’t admit to—murdering a farmhand. After two long years behind barred walls, he makes a cold, determined break and escapes into the dead of winter, setting his sights on the family farm. The place is now run by his younger sisters, Emmie and Ester, and Ester’s husband, Dr Anton Jenks, who himself had accused Salem of the very murder that put him behind bars. What follows is a chilling tale of revenge as Salem targets those he holds responsible for his confinement.

From the moment Salem returns to the world outside, he methodically initiates his plan. He begins with Emmie, staging a murder to make it look like Anton is the killer and thus turning suspicion away from the true culprit in Salem’s view. He also takes the life of Britt, a girl who was with him on the night of the farmhand’s murder and who could have offered him a crucial alibi but chose not to. With these acts, Salem grinds forward, and then, seemingly without being missed, vanishes back into the shadows of the asylum.

A local police inspector becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind Salem’s conviction and the string of killings. He pursues answers with steady resolve, while Anton insists that he saw Salem at the site of Emmie’s murder. Yet the inspector remains skeptical, doubting that someone could escape from the prison-like fortress that supposedly makes such a feat impossible.

The killings continue, escalating the tension. On the next night, Salem targets a corrupt barrister named Mr Clemens. After a tense sequence sparked by the inspector’s visit, Clemens, who is bedridden, calls Anton to his home to discuss their alleged collaboration during the trial. Anton leaves after giving Clemens a harmless sedative, but Salem interrupts this moment and ends Clemens’s life by administering a lethal injection in his sleep, intensifying the mystery surrounding the escape and the accusations.

Salem then makes his way to the farmhouse again, where he seizes a coat and bides his time as Ester speaks to the inspector in a state of panic. After the police depart, Ester attempts a desperate escape through the barn, only to be trapped and killed by Salem. When Anton arrives on the scene, Salem wipes the blood-smeared axe on the doctor’s clothes, echoing the accusation that had already pinned the farmhand’s murder on Salem two years earlier. With the farm now secured in his hands, Salem heads back toward the asylum, the lines between culprit and victim blurring in his mind.

Back at the asylum, Anton descends further into the deceit that fueled the original investigation, confessing his crime to the inspector. The inspector hurries toward the asylum, certain that the truth will finally come to light. In a tense race against time, Salem manages to reach his cell before the inspector, narrowly threading the needle of the alibi that has kept him safe—yet at the last moment, that alibi unravels in a twist no one could foresee, leaving the final truth hanging in a fragile balance.
