The film follows a young red fox kit, Vuk who leaves his family’s den and returns to find it empty. He suspects the human hunter (known in the cartoon as Smoothskinner) who could smell him took them all. His maternal uncle Karak finds him, offers him a place to stay, and raises him in the woods.

As Vuk grows older, he becomes cunning and resourceful. Now a young adult fox, he dares to infiltrate the hunter’s house, where he discovers a captive vixen named Foxy in a cage. During a stormy night, he tricks the guard dogs and other animals, as well as the hunter himself, and helps Foxy escape by smashing the cage open with a loaded wagon.

Foxy joins Vuk and Karak in the woods, but as Autumn arrives, Karak is shot by the hunter during the seasonal hunt. Vuk swears revenge on the hunter and finally achieves it: first by breaking into the hunter’s food locker and eating all the eggs, then by taking poultry from the cages while playing many tricks on the hunter’s dogs (which leaves the two dogs as strays).

Eventually, the hunter responds by setting up bear traps around his house, hoping to lure Vuk with a goose roast; yet the traps claim the hunting dogs, and one even injures the hunter himself. In the end, Vuk and Foxy have cubs of their own.
