The Law and the Lady 1951

Jane Hoskins, Greer Garson, has spent most of her life in service as a lady’s maid and is currently employed by Lord Minden and his haughty wife, Lady Sybil Minden. The lord’s younger twin brother, The Honourable Nigel Duxbury, [Michael Wilding], has only ten thousand pounds to his brother’s five million, a discrepancy born of birth order that makes the elder the one who inherits, and his recent spendthrift ways set him adrift from the family fortune. After sneaking into the Minden home and stealing Lady Minden’s earrings, Nigel’s bold move leads to a swift accusation against Jane, whom Lady Minden wrongly suspects of the theft until Nigel steps forward and claims responsibility.

Jane, furious at the false accusation, resigns from her post and resolves to climb into high society on her own terms. Nigel is secretly impressed by her spine and, after securing the earrings again in exchange for never again troubling his brother, he invites Jane to an evening of fine dining. From that night on, the two hatch a working partnership built on confidence games. They effortlessly deceive a wealthy gentleman into believing Jane is a wealthy widow known as Lady Lovely, who collects donations for a fictitious Egyptian charity called The Nile Fund. By the end of the night they walk away with a hundred pounds and decide to team up as a duo of con artists.

Their escapades take them from Monte Carlo to San Remo and Shanghai, where they gamble and charm their way through various schemes while repeatedly drawing the attention of authorities who order them to leave town. The duo eventually lands in San Francisco, where Nigel suggests a shift toward jewelry theft. Nigel secures a job as a butler in the house of Julia Wortin, a society queen, and Jane befriends Mrs. Wortin, earning a place as a guest in the Wortin home. Julia Wortin, [Marjorie Main], becomes the target of their latest plan: to lift Julia’s diamond necklace.

During a lavish party thrown in Jane’s honor, Julia’s exotic neighbor Juan Dinas, [Fernando Lamas], begins to woo Jane, stirring a real flutter of emotion in her. Jane finds herself torn between the allure of Juan and the long-standing chemistry she shares with Nigel, even as their stated arrangement remains strictly business. On the first night of her stay, Jane locates Julia’s safe and the coveted necklace, but the warmth of Julia’s generosity gives her pause and she hesitates to steal it. The next day Jane receives a proposal from Juan and temporarily contemplates a new life, but she also shares a lingering kiss with Nigel, underscoring the complexity of their relationship.

Ultimately Jane decides to steal the necklace and give it to Nigel to secure his future, a move that Juan quickly discovers when he sees the exchange and realizes Jane is not the Lady Lovely he imagined. Juan and his servant confront Nigel, forcing their way into Jane’s room where she triggers the burglar alarm. Realizing Juan won’t betray her, Jane comes clean to Julia, admitting she is a thief. Nigel arrives with a letter from one of Julia’s other guests that contains libelous information which could be used to blackmail Julia and her circle; the guests start bidding for ownership of the letter, but Jane chooses to give it to Juan for free as a gesture of kindness. Julia, amused by the night’s events, invites Jane and Nigel to stay on.

The morning after their earlier tensions, Juan and Nigel tell Jane that Juan should be the man she ends up with. Jane, however, declares her true love for Nigel and lambasts him for letting her down, insisting that he was “too stupid to know it.” > too stupid to know it

Juan bows out gracefully, and Jane and Nigel decide to go straight and make restitution to those they have wronged. Just as they prepare to leave, a sheriff arrives with an inspector from Scotland Yard who reveals that Lord Minden died in a grouse shooting accident, revealing that Nigel is now Lord Minden and the rightful heir to the fortune. The newly wealthy pair, however, find themselves under arrest for their earlier deception and agree to serve a short jail term before living their happily ever after.
