In 1984, 17-year-old Daniel LaRusso and his mother Lucille leave Newark, New Jersey, for a fresh start in Reseda, Los Angeles. They move into a modest apartment where the kindly yet quirky Okinawan immigrant, Nariyoshi Miyagi, works as their handyman and becomes an unexpected mentor. The neighborhood soon reveals its tensions as Daniel meets Ali Mills, a popular high school student from Encino, and catches the eye of Ali’s ex-boyfriend, Johnny Lawrence, a skilled karate practitioner at the Cobra Kai dojo who leads a crew of ruthless teammates. The Cobra Kai gang—Bobby Brown, Tommy, Jimmy, and Dutch—make it clear they don’t welcome Daniel, targeting him with relentless harassment.

On Halloween, after Daniel defends himself by spraying Johnny with a hose, the situation escalates into a brutal street beating. Miyagi steps in and defeats the Cobra Kai crew with ease, leaving Daniel both impressed and inspired. The young man asks Miyagi to teach him karate, but the old mentor is hesitant. He does, however, propose a plan to resolve the conflict by entering the Under 18 All-Valley Karate Championships, offering Daniel a path to face Kreese’s students on a more level playing field. Kreese, the Cobra Kai sensei and a man with a chilling philosophy, agrees to the terms but warns that if Daniel misses the tournament, the harassment will continue.

Daniel’s training begins with a sequence of seemingly menial chores that challenge his patience. Miyagi explains that repetition builds muscle memory and that true martial arts training is as much about discipline of the spirit as it is about the body. As their bond deepens, Miyagi opens up about his own life, including the heartbreak of losing his wife and son in childbirth while serving with the 442nd Infantry Regiment in Europe during World War II, an experience that earned him the Medal of Honor. Johnny continues to push forward, reaching the finals after overcoming rivals like Darryl Vidal. Bobby hesitates but complies, resulting in a disqualification for Johnny’s adversary and a setback for Daniel.

Back in the locker room, a physician declares that Daniel cannot continue. Yet the fear of giving in to his tormentors drives him to request a controversial pain-suppressing technique from Miyagi, enabling him to return to the mat. The bout resumes with Daniel and Johnny locked in a tense back-and-forth, each defending against the other’s best moves. The match reaches a pivotal moment when Daniel uses a scissor-leg maneuver to trip Johnny and lands a blow to the back of his head, accompanied by a nosebleed. Kreese then directs Johnny to sweep Daniel’s injured leg—an unethical tactic Johnny resists but ultimately follows. The score stays tight at 2–2 as Johnny seizes Daniel’s leg and delivers a brutal elbow, forcing Daniel to summon everything he has.

With the crowd roaring, Daniel taps into the moment’s electricity and takes up the “Crane” stance he once observed Miyagi perform on the beach. Johnny charges, but Daniel leaps and delivers a decisive front kick to Johnny’s chin, clinching the championship and earning the crowd’s cheers.
