Three university students — Ingrid from Denmark, Liliane Sottane — and Americans Bill, Richard Lyon and Ronnie, David Rose — take a nighttime tour of Ambrose Castle in England to test a rumor of haunting. The trio is curious, adventurous, and a little wary, drawn by the old stones that whisper of centuries past. As they wander the dim corridors and echoing halls, they come to learn that the castle’s ghosts aren’t just legends; they’re real enough to make the living feel oddly out of place.

From the shadows strides the Ghost of the Fourth Earl of Ambrose, Clive Revill, who explains a centuries-old grievance that keeps the dead tethered to the castle. He, along with other spectral residents, is tormented by Malcolm, a man who was beheaded six hundred years earlier and condemned to wander until his head and body are reunited. The Ghost asks Ingrid, Bill, and Ronnie for help, insisting that only a precise ritual can set things right. He reveals that the task hinges on locating a secret chamber containing a pouch of ashes and using them on Malcolm’s portrait while reciting an ancient incantation. The weight of the moment settles over the trio as the ghost promises to share the exact words only once.

Ingrid, Bill, and Ronnie scramble to keep pace with the clues, racing through cobwebbed stairwells and hidden passages in a bid to locate the chamber before time or fear overwhelms them. The temporary relief of hope is shattered when they overhear the chilling screams of Lady Wingfield, murdered by her husband Charles upon his return from the Crusades to find a child not his own.
