What Is The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals About?

The premise of The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals in 305 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In the unremarkable town of Hatchetfield, Paul Matthews lives a comfortably mundane life. He works a routine office job, enjoys movies and pizza, and often stops by the local coffee shop just to steal glimpses of Emma Perkins, the barista he quietly pines for. There is, however, one trait that sets Paul apart from his neighbors: an unshakable disdain for musicals. His ordinary existence feels safe, predictable, and blissfully free of spontaneous song and dance — or so he believes.

That peace shatters when something inexplicable descends upon Hatchetfield, transforming familiar streets, shops, and workplaces into a surreal spectacle. Suddenly, coworkers burst into choreographed numbers, strangers belt heartfelt ballads at unsuspecting bystanders, and the line between reality and stage performance dissolves in unsettling ways. What begins as baffling and absurd quickly spirals into something far more menacing, as the urge to sing and dance spreads through the town. Paul, immune to whatever is overtaking everyone around him, must navigate a world that no longer makes sense.

What makes Paul’s fight deeply personal is Emma, the one person whose presence anchors him as everything else unravels. Their shared history hints at feelings he has never been able to express, and she becomes both a comfort and a growing concern as the chaos spreads. As familiar faces change in alarming ways, Paul must reckon with shifting loyalties and dangers that blur the line between ally and threat.

Blending horror with dark comedy, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals turns Broadway tradition into something sinister and unpredictable. The crisis pushes Paul from passive observer into a desperate fight for survival, armed with nothing more than his stubbornness and his unyielding dislike of musicals. The stage has come to Hatchetfield, and the only person unbothered by its spell now holds the key to surviving whatever lurks behind the spotlight.

Spoilers ahead

In the quiet town of Hatchetfield, an unremarkable man named Paul stands out for one specific reason: he cannot stand musicals. While his coworkers Bill, Charlotte, and Ted go about their lives, Paul avoids the local theater and spends his time visiting Emma, a barista he admires. However, after a strange meteor strikes the local Starlight Theater, the town begins to transform into a living musical.

The townspeople start singing and dancing involuntarily, a phenomenon Paul finds horrifying. He discovers that the coffee at Beanie’s has been contaminated with a mysterious blue substance, and soon he and Emma find themselves fleeing through the streets with Bill, Charlotte, and Ted. They seek refuge with an eccentric biology teacher, Professor Hidgens, who explains that the meteor brought an alien hive mind to Earth that communicates exclusively through song.

Tragedy strikes as the infection spreads. Sam is infected and kills Charlotte, while Bill is killed by his own daughter, Alice, during a rescue attempt at the high school. Paul is eventually intercepted by General MacNamara, leader of a paranormal military unit called PEIP. MacNamara offers Paul a way out if he can rescue Emma.

Back at the compound, Professor Hidgens succumbs to his own secret love for theater, attempting to lead the aliens in a song before being disemboweled. In the chaotic finale, Ted is assimilated by the infected General, and the helicopter pilot, Zoey, crashes their escape vehicle. With Emma severely injured, Paul makes a final stand at the Starlight Theater. Despite the alien hive mind attempting to force him to sing, he manages to destroy the meteor with grenades.

Two weeks later, Emma is in witness protection, believing the nightmare is over. When Paul arrives to reunite with her, he begins to sing, revealing that he was infected after all. The movie ends with a chilling realization: Emma is trapped on a stage, unable to escape the inevitable song of the hive.
