After Jenny Piper and Arthur Fitton’s lively wedding celebration at a local Lancashire pub, the newlyweds spend their first night together at the Fitton family home. The night begins with Arthur’s father, John Mills, and some inebriated guests singing loudly in the living room. Arthur, who is passionate about literature and classical music, finds himself at odds with his father, who is a lifelong gasworks employee and struggles to understand his son’s interests. Tensions run high throughout the evening, and when the couple finally retire to bed, their marital mattress unexpectedly collapses, a prank played by Arthur’s boorish employer, Joe Thompson.
