During an inmate transport, several policemen are attacked and killed by assassins, freeing No Sang-sik Jo Young-jin. After recapturing some of the escaping prisoners, Oh Gu-tak [Kim Sang-joong], the former boss of a specialized unit known as the Crime Unit, is called by the head officer to reassemble his team and continue the pursuit. The officer explains that Sang-sik was about to testify to the real leader of the yakuza, and charges Oh with tracking down the remaining fugitives. Oh recruits Woong-Cheol [Don Lee], a former crimefighter now serving time, and Yoo-Sung [Jang Ki-yong], a former police officer, offering them a chance at reduced sentences if they succeed. The duo swiftly secures Kwak No-soon [Kim A-joong], also known as Jessica, whose information becomes a crucial lead in closing in on Kim Chang-min [Park Sang-wook], one of the escaped prisoners. They manage to locate Kim, but Detective Choi [Jeon Ik-ryoung] arrests him, complicating the operation and signaling deeper tensions within the force. It becomes clear that Woong-Cheol is pursuing the mission as part of a personal vendetta to settle the score with the gangster boss who killed his best friend Nam Myung-seok [Kong Jeong-hwan]. After Oh is hospitalized for liver cancer, the unit retrieves Kim and the other prisoners, including Sang-sik, and presses Sang-sik for more details. He reveals that Yoshihara, the gang’s true leader, was behind the operations and that Sang-sik’s diary could expose him. However, the head officer—a mole aligned with Yoshihara—steals the diary and kills Sang-sik, leaving the unit to die in a fire but they manage to escape. Choi helps them pinpoint Yoshihara’s location in a factory, and, with Woong-Cheol’s ally, they assault the basement and defeat Yoshihara’s goons. In a brutal confrontation, Woong-Cheol faces Yoshihara and exacts punishment for Nam Myung-seok’s death, resulting in Yoshihara and his associates being arrested, while the head officer is also brought to justice. Oh recovers from cancer and, inspired by Woong-Cheol’s resolve, returns to duty. The mission ends with the unit’s prison sentences reduced and Woong-Cheol being hired for another assignment, hinting at further clashes to come.

The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos Spoiler-Free Summary

Discover the spoiler-free summary of The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos (2019). Get a concise overview without any spoilers.

In a remote countryside where the rhythms of daily life are dictated by age‑old traditions and the ever‑shifting undercurrents of local politics, the community gathers around a modest village hall that feels both like a sanctuary and a stage for whispered power plays. The air is heavy with the scent of harvested fields and the unspoken expectations that come with stewardship of the land. Within this world, authority is as much a matter of reputation as it is of official title, and every decision reverberates through tightly‑knit families who have lived side‑by‑side for generations.

Village Head has spent his years trying to carve a path of peace for those he leads, especially for Son, the young man whose future he wishes to keep far from the violent cycles that have scarred the region. The father’s protective instincts drive him to shield his child from the raw, often brutal realities of rural politics, hoping to steer him toward a quieter, safer existence. Yet fate has a way of pulling one back into the very currents they strive to avoid, and circumstances soon compel the son to return to his roots, confronting the forces he was raised to sidestep.

The film’s tone balances stark realism with a lingering, almost lyrical sense of duty, underscored by the echo of a traditional weapon that symbolizes both heritage and resilience. As the son steps forward, the weight of his lineage and the expectations of his community press upon him, hinting at a journey where personal conviction meets collective responsibility. In this tense, emotionally charged setting, the story invites viewers to wonder how far one will go to protect family and preserve the fragile harmony of a world on the brink of change.
