The Attacks Of 26/11 2013

Before a committee investigating the tragic 2008 Mumbai Attacks, the character Rakesh Maria, who serves as the Joint Commissioner of Police, shares a harrowing account of the events unfolded during the attacks, detailing the police’s response and the intense interrogation of the lone surviving assailant, Ajmal Kasab.

On 22 November 2008, the scene escalates when ten militants from the group Lashkar-e-Taiba, including Kasab, hijack the Indian fishing vessel MV Kuber on international waters. This ruthless act leads them to murder the crew and subsequently reach the shores of Mumbai using inflatable speedboats on the night of 26 November. Upon arrival, they divide into pairs and distribute themselves across the city to attack various high-profile locales, targeting key places in South Mumbai such as CST, Leopold Cafe, the illustrious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Oberoi Trident Hotel, Nariman House, and Cama Hospital.

At CST, Kasab, alongside his accomplice Ismail Khan, unleashes a hail of gunfire on unsuspecting commuters, resulting in numerous casualties. Although the Mumbai Police attempt to respond to the horrifying assault, they are hampered by a lack of sufficient firepower. The situation escalates as Kasab and Ismail move towards Cama Hospital, where they ambush a police vehicle, tragically killing Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte, and Inspector Vijay Salaskar in the process. Following this, they commandeer the police vehicle but are ultimately intercepted at a roadblock near Girgaum Chowpatty. During the confrontation, Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble shows incredible bravery as he grapples with Kasab, sustaining fatal injuries yet allowing his comrades to capture Kasab alive; Ismail, on the other hand, meets his demise in the altercation.

Meanwhile, the remaining militants occupy the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and Nariman House, taking hostages while engaging in extended firefights. Local police and hotel personnel bravely attempt to manage the situation until National Security Guard (NSG) commandos arrive on the scene to neutralize the threats.

After Kasab’s capture, Maria leads a tense interrogation process. Initially, Kasab exhibits pronounced radicalization, confidently proclaiming that his atrocities against “infidels” would secure his path to Jannah. Angered by Kasab’s convictions, Maria takes him to view the bodies of his fallen peers in a mortuary, delivering a compelling monologue that dismantles the justifications fed to Kasab by his mentors. He emphasizes how these figures manipulate desperate and uneducated young men into committing such heinous acts while they remain untouched. Confronted with the stark reality of his actions, Kasab ultimately breaks down, expressing deep remorse for the devastation caused.

The film reaches a poignant conclusion as Kasab is put on trial, convicted of his crimes, and executed by hanging at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on 21 November 2012. The film culminates with a solemn tribute to both the victims and the brave first responders who lost their lives during the attacks, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten.
