The Adventures of the American Rabbit 1986

Robert Rabbit [Barry Gordon] is born, and his first world is filled with the warmth of family and friends who welcome him into life. As a boy, Rob’s instincts and speed reveal a hidden power. When a dangerous moment puts his parents in jeopardy—an accelerating boulder menacing their safety—Rob sprints forward and transforms into a striped, star-spangled superhero on gleaming golden rollerskates. The old rabbit reappears, delivering a revelation: he is the American Rabbit, a being capable of shifting into heroic form when Rob runs, and reverting to his ordinary self when he pronounces his own name. This discovery sets Rob on a path toward keeping his powers secret while navigating a new, bustling world.

Seeking anonymity and independence, Rob moves to the city and finds work as a piano player at Panda Monium, a nightclub run by a panda named Teddy [Bob Arbogast] and a female rabbit named Bunny O’Hare [Laurie O’Brien]. The club operates under the constant pressure of a local protection racket led by a hard-edged gang. The arrival of these thugs brings trouble to Panda Monium: their motorcycles disrupt a White Brothers show, and Teddy refuses to pay for “insurance,” provoking a direct, violent confrontation. Bunny and Teddy organize a peaceful march to stand up to the extortionists, but Walt [Kenneth Mars], the Jackals’ polished boss, orders the gang to ride in the march and cause a distraction. The true danger arrives when the Jackals sabotage the city’s famous Golden Gate Bridge, operators on the site collapse the cables, and catastrophe seems near. In a heroic instant, the American Rabbit appears and stops the bridge from collapsing, proving that Rob’s abilities can alter fate even in the most daunting moments. Teddy then announces a cross-country tour with the White Brothers to raise funds to rebuild Panda Monium.

The forces of the Jackals escalate their plan. Walt orders the abduction of a gorilla named Ping Pong [Lorenzo Music] and seduces him into turning against the American Rabbit. They haul Ping Pong away to a hidden lair in the Grand Canyon, threatening a brutal fate unless Rob concedes defeat. Rob detects Ping Pong’s absence, and with Teddy, Bunny, and the White Brothers, he pursues a rescue mission that culminates in a daring rescue as he protects Ping Pong and asserts his power as the American Rabbit.

The journey continues to New Orleans, where the group hopes to play for audiences and raise funds again. Rob’s team is trapped on a boat that’s set aflame by Walt and the Jackals, but Rob’s transformation saves them all as they escape the burning vessel. Bunny struggles with fear for Rob, but the American Rabbit promises to search for him and uncover more about the threat. Their trek soon points toward New York, where Teddy’s connections might open up new opportunities to keep them moving forward.

Meanwhile, Walt and the Jackals secure a chocolate-making moose and his son and take over the Statue of Liberty for a day. They rig the statue with dynamite and threaten to blow it up, coercing the visiting public to comply with their demands. The American Rabbit uncovers the danger, tracks the villain’s voice to his hideout, and brings the threat to a decisive end. In a stunning reveal, the man behind the mask—Walt—is unmasked as the buzzard Vultor [Kenneth Mars], and his glare-cold plan to control the city flickers to life as he sits at the detonator, forcing the hero to confront him in a public showdown. The confrontation leaves a stain of humiliation on Rob, who withdraws from the public eye, ashamed that he couldn’t protect the city in that moment.

With the American Rabbit out of sight, Vultor and his Jackals tighten their grip on New York, but the city’s people turn in defiance when promises fail and lawlessness grows. Teddy, Bunny, Ping Pong, and the White Brothers rally to free the moose and his son, and the tide begins to turn. The villain, furious at the resistance, curses the Jackals as traitors and swears to annihilate the American Rabbit and the city with a doomsday device.

Rob, feeling like a failure, hails a cab and tells the driver he’s a loser. The elderly rabbit from Rob’s first encounter—an unwitting mentor figure—appears in the driver’s seat and offers a piece of enduring wisdom: “You can’t win ’em all, but you can make a power play of your own.” The driver’s reminder sparks Rob’s resolve, and a Niagara Falls poster catches his eye, reigniting his determination. He uses his powers to generate a force field that stops the water from feeding the hydroelectric turbines, effectively cutting power to the city and deactivating the doomsday switch. The stage is set for a final clash: Vultor drives forward with one last, desperate assault, but the American Rabbit refuses any alliance and chases the buzzard into a raging blizzard, where Vultor meets his end.

Emerging from the storm, Rob returns to his friends as the city hums with renewed energy. Bunny O’Hare greets him with a kiss, a tender reward for his perseverance, and the dream of Panda Monium’s future begins to glow again in the skyline.
