In a jungle of Africa, a mother fruit bat gives birth to a new baby named Stellaluna. The newborn settles into the mother's embrace as their small bat family begins life together. The scene establishes Stellaluna's place in the bat community.

Owl attack and fall

An owl swoops through the night and attacks the bat colony, knocking Stellaluna free from her mother's embrace. She plunges toward the forest below and lands among unfamiliar sounds and sights. The peril marks the start of her unlikely journey away from her mother.

Adopted by sparrows

Stellaluna lands in a sparrow nest with Pip, Flitter, and Flap. The sparrow family tentatively accepts her, but the integration comes with bird-specific rules. It marks the beginning of her awkward adjustment to life among birds.
