Snipes unfolds in Philadelphia through the eyes of Erik, a young man who idolizes a local rapper named Prolifik and works for Hype Studio as part of its street promo team, plastering posters around the city to push Prolifik’s newest release. He regularly chats with Cheryl, a coworker at Hype Studio, while the studio itself is owned by Bobby Starr, who also runs the label and has uneasy ties to a mob boss named Johnnie Marandin, who resents him for a long-ago romance with his daughter when Bobby was supposed to mentor her.

The story centers on a brewing crisis: Prolifik has already spent his advance and is under pressure to deliver a full project, with Bobby threatening to end his career if he can’t bring it in soon. In response, Clarence hatches a scheme to save everyone via a staged kidnapping and a fake murder. The plan is simple in its brutality—Clarence’s crew will “kidnap” Prolifik and record his murder, then hold the master tapes for ransom to secure money and a future.

Meanwhile, Erik and his rapper friend Malik dream of breaking into the music industry. They break into the studio at night, after Erik steals the studio key from Cheryl’s desk to sneak in and record. It’s there that they witness a murder and scramble to escape. The following day, it seems the supposed double murder never happened, but Erik begins to question what he saw and shares his doubts with Cheryl.

Tensions escalate when Malik is visited at home by Bobby Starr and two gangsters. Bobby suspects that Erik and Malik stole the tapes, and he presses Malik to deny being at the studio. Erik leaves a voicemail that betrays their presence, which the men use to justify pursuing Malik. Malik makes a narrow escape but is struck by a car and dies at the scene, a tragedy Erik discovers soon after, breaking down at the sight.

With danger closing in, Erik and Cheryl decide to flee and hole up at a motel. Their search for safety is short-lived, however, as Bobby’s crew tracks Erik down and abducts him back at Hype Studio. He endures brutal beatings, even having his nose cut, while Bobby presses him for the identity of the tapes’ holder. Facing death if he won’t name someone, Erik finally blurts out the name “Nino Brown” (Malik’s stage name). Bobby and his henchmen briefly leave him alone to deliberate. Seizing the moment, Erik escapes with a tape that depicts Prolifik’s supposed death. He makes it back to the street, where he encounters Bugsy and Trix, two individuals whose posters Erik previously removed in his efforts to promote Prolifik. Exhausted and bleeding, Erik collapses.

When Erik regroups at the clubhouse, Trix sews his nose back together. After watching Prolifik’s “death” tape with Bugsy, Erik resolves to uncover the truth behind Prolifik’s death and the missing music. He reconnects with Cheryl, who drops a crucial revelation: the signing of Prolifik was a ruse. The real Prolifik was a rapper named Damon, who was involved in a prior robbery that went wrong and resulted in his death. The day before the incident, Cheryl had brought a tape to Bobby, who wanted to sign Prolifik. Clarence, who could mimic Prolifik’s words and mannerisms perfectly because he knew every lyric, stepped in to impersonate Prolifik. But Clarence lacked real talent and could not produce a second album, which is why he orchestrated his own “kidnapping” and “murder” to cover the scam.

The web tightens as Johnnie confronts Bobby, accusing him of letting him down and threatening a more permanent consequence. Bobby tries to smooth things over, insisting he can still deliver the second album, but Johnnie is not convinced and hints at violence—“going for a ride.” The plan begins to unravel when Cheryl and Erik get involved. In a desperate turn, while Erik is away, Clarence kills Floyd, secures Cheryl, and brings her to an abandoned house. A struggle over Clarence’s gun ends with Cheryl fatally shot; Erik arrives in time to talk to her before she dies. Clarence, recognizing Erik, tries to persuade him to help, but Erik destroys his chance with an empty gun. As Clarence attempts to reload, Erik demands that he stop, and then shoots Clarence, ending the immediate threat.

In the aftermath, Erik holds the master tapes tied to Clarence’s “album.” Bugsy informs him of Bobby Starr’s demise, confirming the collapse of the criminal web surrounding the studio. Erik discards the tapes by dumping them into a body of water beneath a bridge. He begins to walk away as the city’s radio crackles to life with Sway Calloway announcing Prolifik’s death and playing Prolifik’s music in the background, sealing the fates of the people who sought to control him and his art.
