Selah and the Spades 2019

Selah Summers (Lovie Simone) is in her final year at the prestigious Haldwell Boarding and Day School, where she is a key figure in the school’s social hierarchy. She leads the [spades] faction, which is responsible for handling the drug dealings within the school, a position that gives her considerable power but also puts her at constant risk of exposure and betrayal. Her trusted confidant and enforcer, Maxxie, played by Jharrel Jerome, assists her in maintaining control of their operations. As she prepares to graduate, Selah faces the difficult challenge of choosing a successor to take over her faction, grappling with the fear of losing influence and control.

The story unfolds with the arrival of the new Headmaster, Banton, portrayed by Jesse Williams, who begins to suspect that there is more beneath the surface of the school’s intricate social web. Concurrently, Paloma Davis, played by Celeste O’Connor, a new scholarship student, arrives at Haldwell and quickly catches the attention of the administration. She mentions to Banton that she’s working on the yearbook, but quickly becomes involved in the complex dynamics of the student body by taking photos of the cheerleaders on the Spirit Squad and capturing candid moments of various factions.

Selah, ever cautious and strategic, notices Bobby, the formidable leader of the Bobbys faction, canoodling with Two Tom, the leader of the prefects, and asks Paloma to discreetly photograph them under the pretense of a school project. Paloma, showing integrity, refuses payment for her efforts, and Selah, recognizing a kindred spirit, invites her to her dorm after school to see something exciting. This turns out to be the senior prank, where the students leave hundreds of cups of water on the stairs leading to the Headmaster’s office, a clever act of rebellion.

As the narrative deepens, Selah reveals her plan to make Paloma her successor, despite reservations from Maxxie, who thinks she’s too new to the scene. They introduce Paloma to the secret world of the faction, showing her the stash of drugs and their ledger. Meanwhile, another faction leader, Tarit, warns her there is a snitch in their midst, hinting that her trusted inner circle, especially Maxxie, might be compromised. Suspicion begins to grow, and when Selah confronts Maxxie about the missing ledger, she learns that someone has stolen it—raising questions about loyalty and betrayal.

The tensions escalate when Selah, under pressure from her mother Maybelle, played by Gina Torres, is called home. Her mother delivers a parable about the scorpion and the frog, subtly warning her of her own dark nature and the importance of self-protection amidst her dangerous lifestyle. Meanwhile, conflicts between factions intensify; [Bobby] (/actor/ana-mulvoy-ten) confronts Selah about a problematic order, suspecting Maxxie’s involvement, which deepens the mistrust.

Paloma begins to ask more questions about prom, leading to heated exchanges with Selah, who becomes irritable and defensive. Paloma later questions Maxxie about his involvement with the ledger, and he admits he misplaced it, criticizing Selah for overreacting and revealing tensions within their circle. This culminates in Selah discovering that Maxxie may have stolen the ledger, leading her to feel devastated and betrayed.

In a desperate bid to maintain power and eliminate threats, Selah insists on violent measures against a rat she believes is leaking information—an act she convinces Paloma to carry out despite her moral doubts. Paloma, feeling pressured and conflicted, eventually fights back in self-defense, bruised and bloodied, reinforcing the brutal environment she’s immersed in.

Despite the chaos, Selah sends Maxxie to make a drug pickup alone—against their usual strict rules—highlighting her fragile state. His return, battered, prompts a confrontation that exposes her insecurities. She dismisses him, fires him, and breaks down crying, revealing her vulnerability beneath the tough exterior.

The unrest at Haldwell reaches a climax when Banton cancels prom, citing suspicions about the factions’ underhanded activities. The students, furious, rally together, and Paloma steps up with a bold plan to resurrect their senior celebration by organizing a prom in the woods, symbolizing a fight for their independence from the school’s and Selah’s control.

Bobby warns Paloma about Teela, a former member of the Bobbys who was expelled after being falsely accused of drug use, which he suggests might have been a setup orchestrated by Selah to divert attention. Bobby emphasizes that the factions favor Paloma and warns her not to be manipulated by Selah’s darker ambitions.

Later at the prom, Selah, attempting to manipulate Paloma further, drugs her with pills slipped into her drink. Paloma quickly begins to feel strange, and when she questions Selah about her behavior, the latter falsely claims it was Paloma’s own choice. The situation spirals out of control when Maxxie confronts Selah about her manipulations, expressing his frustration and concern over her increasingly dangerous tactics.

The climax unfolds as Paloma, realizing Selah’s betrayal, hits her and tries to escape, falling over a railing in the process. Maxxie and Selah manage to pull her to safety, but this harrowing moment leaves all three of them contemplating the fragile balance of power, loyalty, and morality. As they walk back toward the prom in the woods, they are left to reckon with the consequences of their actions, knowing that their lives—and their futures—have been forever altered by the events of this tense and complicated year.
