What Is Scare Package About?
The premise of Scare Package in 307 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
In the faded glow of a struggling video store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium, Chad Buckley reigns as its resident know-it-all, a horror aficionado whose encyclopedic knowledge of fright films is matched only by his passion for the fading format of VHS. He spends his days behind the counter, debating genre lore and making recommendations with a seriousness that borders on ritual, even as the aisles grow dustier. To him, every tape is a sacred text, and every rental an act of cinematic preservation.
Among the store’s fixtures is Sam, a regular whose loud, unsolicited opinions clash spectacularly with Chad’s. Their bickering is the heartbeat of the shop, a long-running rivalry punctuated by Sam’s persistent dream of joining the staff. When a new applicant, Hawn, walks through the door and is instantly hired, Sam’s frustration boils over, and Chad finds himself in the unusual position of mentor, walking Hawn through the unwritten rules of the trade and the deeply opinionated world of horror.
The film unfolds as an anthology, weaving together a series of wildly imaginative short stories that parody nearly every trope in the horror playbook — from cabin-in-the-woods showdowns to cursed objects, masked killers, and supernatural encounters. Each short bursts with a playful mix of gore and comedy, turning genre conventions inside out with affectionate absurdity. The atmosphere is equal parts campy and reverent, a love letter to horror from filmmakers who clearly know the genre’s every trick.
Woven between these segments is an undercurrent of mystery. Hawn begins to suspect that Chad is hiding something sinister behind his encyclopedic charm, and Chad himself seems to carry secrets that the camera only hints at. The frame narrative blurs the line between the horror on screen and the unsettling quiet of the store, inviting viewers to wonder where the movie ends and the real nightmare begins.

This film is an anthology of horror shorts wrapped within a larger, overarching frame narrative. The story centers on Chad Buckley, a dedicated horror enthusiast who manages a struggling video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. His life becomes complicated when he hires a new employee, Hawn, much to the annoyance of Sam, a rude regular customer who has spent years trying to get a job at the store. Throughout the day, various horror stories are introduced—either as pitches, rentals, or descriptions—which transition the viewer into several standalone segments.
The frame narrative takes a dark turn when it is revealed that Hawn has betrayed Chad Buckley. Hawn is actually part of a scientific team conducting experiments on a notorious serial killer known as the Devil’s Lake Impaler Dustin Runnels in a facility beneath the store. Trapped with other captives, Chad realizes they are all acting out horror movie stereotypes, including the “final girl” and the “stoner.” As the group attempts to escape, they learn the Impaler was driven to madness after his friend Jimmy was killed by frat boys. In a chaotic climax, the group is assisted by the sudden appearance of Joe Bob Briggs, though Chad eventually falls victim to the killer. Ultimately, the true final girl and the stoner manage to defeat the Impaler with the help of Mike Myers, who ensures the killer’s demise in a fiery explosion.
The anthology includes several unique tales:
- The Role of Mike: Mike Myers is depicted as a background character whose job is to set up horror movie tropes. After venting about his lack of importance, he attempts to become a main character by interfering in a babysitting scenario, only to accidentally kill Hannah and Tess, eventually being shot by a police officer.
- The Back Woods Slasher: A camping trip for a group of friends turns deadly when they encounter a mutating “goo-man.” The situation escalates when a masked killer, known as the Back Woods Slasher, begins brutally murdering the group.
- M.I.S.T.E.R.: A Husband struggling with his masculinity joins an organization called Men In Serious Turmoil Establishing Rights. After discovering the group are actually werewolves, he hunts them down before returning to a dark ceremony with his Wife.
- The Cursed Lollipop: Ray and Ali steal a skull-shaped lollipop from a convenience store. After consuming it, their faces transform into skulls, leading to a violent confrontation with a stalker.
- The Unkillable Killer: Daisy and her friends capture a masked killer and subject him to various torture methods, including electrocution and firecrackers. Despite their efforts, the killer returns to claim revenge, revealing a tragic family connection before being put through a wood chipper.
- The Marked Man: Franchesca becomes entangled in a supernatural cycle after a “marked man” Aaron D. Alexander is buried alive. Their souls swap bodies in a struggle for existence, ending with a mundane irony regarding a spoiled TV show finale.
