In New York City, Charlie Prince [Max Schneider] is an orphaned teenager living in his late mother’s karaoke bar, The Palace, which his stern, unloving stepfather, Arthur McGowens [Robert Moloney], keeps running as a way to control him. Arthur makes Charlie do most of the cleaning, while Diego [Zak Santiago] and Martha [Christina Sicoli] treat him like family, and his stepbrothers—Andrew McGowens [Keenan Tracey] and Lloyd McGowens [Burkely Duffield]—tease and undermine him at every turn. All three boys dream of being singers, and while Andrew lacks talent (something Arthur stubbornly ignores), Charlie is gifted with a strong singing voice and the ability to write music, though he hasn’t yet broken through. Lloyd, too, suffers under the family dynamic but quietly sympathizes with Charlie, hoping for a chance to stand up to them.

Across town, pop star Kadee Worth [Keke Palmer] is the public face of Majesty Records, daughter of music mogul Reginal Worth [Isaiah Mustafa], and treated as a glamorous icon. Beneath the shine, she is frustrated by performing songs someone else wrote and wearing outfits chosen by others. Her so‑called “boyfriend,” Finn [Avan Jogia], is more about appearances than real connection, and Reginald Worth’s push to mold her into a commercial sensation only fuels her longing to share her true voice.

The turning point comes when Arthur sends Charlie to deliver his stepbrothers’ track, “Androyd,” to Majesty for the label’s new talent contest. On the way, he collides with Kadee after her dog Trumpet darts toward him. He hands in the disk and, unexpectedly, spots a potential job as a janitor at Majesty. Shawn [Drake Bell], a Majesty employee, notices Charlie’s raw talent in the studio and helps him record a demo. Charlie’s obvious gift starts to catch Kadee’s attention, and she begins following him, drawn by the possibility of hearing real artistry.

Kadee finally confides that she writes her own music, and Charlie takes her into town to test her voice. Wearing a disguise that humbles them both, she performs one of her songs on the street and loves the sense of freedom it gives her. In gratitude, she invites Charlie to Majesty Records’ Masquerade Ball, where the talent contest winner will be announced. Arthur confiscates the invitation to use it for Androyd’s appearance at the ball, but with Diego and Martha’s help, Charlie engineers a sneaky entrance.

At the ball, Charlie meets Shawn again, who hands him a demo CD bearing the stage name “Rags” as a badge of his humble beginnings. When the planned winner fails to perform, Arthur pushes Androyd forward, only to be met with boos from the crowd. Shawn encourages Charlie to perform instead, and he delivers a show-stopping turn that clears the room of doubt as he escapes with the crowd’s cheers, just in time to see his stepfamily leave. He kisses Kadee and, in a moment of honesty, tells her to “Be you,” while accidentally dropping his CD.

Determined to uncover who Rags is, Kadee enlists Reginald Worth’s help, though he resists, worried about the business implications. Charlie eavesdrops on a tense exchange and reluctantly steps back, quickly realizing that Kadee is impressed by him, and she parts ways with Finn. Lloyd—recognizing Charlie’s performance from the shoe design he once crafted for him—encourages Charlie to pursue Kadee and promises to keep his secret.

The drama intensifies when Andrew steals Charlie’s songbook and hands it to Arthur. During auditions, Reginald arrives and apologizes for ignoring Kadee, pledging to be more receptive. Charlie again encourages Kadee, urging her to stay true to herself with a firm, heartfelt “Be you.” Andrew interrupts the moment, and Arthur locks Charlie in a closet so Andrew can pose as Rags, with Lloyd serving as a backup singer. Arthur also reveals plans to sell The Palace. Charlie escapes with Trumpet’s help and the aid of Kadee’s friends, arriving just as Andrew signs a deal with Reginald Worth.

Heartbroken and ready to leave, Charlie is convinced to stay long enough for a proper introduction of Rags. Kadee gathers the courage to reveal the truth to the crowd by calling Charlie onto the stage, and he finally performs with her. The moment astounds Reginald, who agrees to place Kadee in charge of her career, and Lloyd’s confession—that Charlie’s mom left The Palace to him, not Arthur—adds a personal twist to the day’s triumph.

Charlie and Kadee begin dating and rise to fame together, gracing magazine covers as a symbol of authentic artistry. In the finale, they sing together at The Palace, now owned by Charlie and managed by Diego and Martha; Lloyd joins as a backup dancer, while Arthur and Andrew face consequences, effectively relegated to janitorial work as a reminder of the wrongs they once inflicted.
