Porky’s Picnic 1939

Porky Pig (voice by Mel Blanc) rides his bike to his girlfriend’s house with a simple plan for a day out. He asks Petunia Pig if she’d like to go on a picnic, and she heads upstairs to fetch her basket before they set off. As they stroll along, they pass a window where Pinky is dozing, but the curious little one overhears their plans and decides to tag along for the adventure.

What starts as a quiet jaunt quickly turns into a humorous scramble when Pinky reaches out and tugs at the sidecar, pulling out a nail and causing the bike to split into two pieces on separate routes. The two wheels—one with Porky and Petunia, one separated from the other—careen along, each on a different track, while Pinky merrily skips ahead, delighted by the chaos he’s stirred up. Petunia, in full panic mode, covers her eyes and braces for whatever comes next, even as Porky tries to keep the mood light and reassure her that it’ll all work out.

They soon pass a speeding train and, as if by a comic twist of fate, the two halves of the vehicle manage to reconnect just in time for Porky to finish his story. Pinky, living up to his mischievous nature, proclaims that it was the best story he has “never” heard, a line that lands with a wag of the tail on their park-bound journey. Before long, Pinky ambles toward the zoo, slipping past a dozing crocodile or alligator, while Petunia calls out to Porky to keep an eye on their rambunctious companion. The trio moves deeper into the park, and Porky catches up to Pinky just as the little rascal curls up beside a big cat and its cubs. With a tangle of bars and a nervous whisper, Porky slips into the cage to retrieve Pinky and, in the process, narrowly avoids a tense moment with the cat.

The chase resumes in earnest as Porky and Petunia work together to separate Pinky from danger, guiding him away from the cat’s enclosure and toward the safety of the outer path. A quick misstep sends Porky tumbling into the mud, but Petunia’s kiss—soft and reassuring—keeps the mood buoyant and affectionate as the couple shares a light moment amid the mayhem.

As the adventure unfolds and the trio regroups, Porky’s attention returns to the lively little squirrel they spotted earlier. Pinky again eyes the creature with the scissors, but the same nimble squirrel surprises him—it’s armed with a tiny wooden plank of its own and uses it to strike back in a cheeky, comic display of resistance. The squirrel’s quick counterplay finally teaches Pinky a lesson in mischief, and the baby meets his playful punishment in the classic cartoon fashion.

The day concludes with a heartwarming, if chaotic, sense of togetherness.
