On the way, he’s momentarily distracted by a woman tumbling from a horse, a pothole jolts his ride, and two tires burst. He’s soon rescued by Bobby Caine, the Deputy Caine, who drives him into Rockwell Falls and helps him find a place to stay.

As he digs deeper, Kady uncovers a chilling pattern rooted in biblical numerology. With the help of a sympathetic resident who arrived in Rockwell Falls eight years earlier, Kady engineers an escape. They set fire to the town garage as a diversion, and his plan includes rescuing Amanda from the clinic. But the escape is marred by tragedy: Courtney has been lobotomized by Dr. Greaver, leaving Kady and Amanda to flee on a stolen tow truck.
