As a 38-year-old bachelor grappling with the overbearing presence of his mother, Rose (portrayed by Maureen O’Hara), Chicago police officer Danny Muldoon remains tethered to familial obligations following his father’s untimely death. His brother Patrick (played by Kevin Dunn) has long urged him to escape these burdens and embrace a fresh start in Florida, while Rose continuously harbors morbid thoughts of her own mortality, fearing for Danny’s absence.

In the midst of this chaotic domestic life, the local tavern buzzes with the unsettling arrival of two men carrying a body, capturing the interest of the funeral director and his introverted daughter, Theresa Luna. It is here that Danny lays his eyes on Theresa, whose initial shyness gradually gives way to an emerging confidence during their blossoming romance. They embark on a series of dates that spark a deep connection between them.

However, the weight of Danny’s guilt over potentially abandoning his mother, combined with Rose’s incessant meddling, creates significant strain in their relationship. At a pivotal dinner, Theresa bravely speaks out against both Rose and Danny, challenging them for fostering her mother’s destructive behavior. This confrontation leads Danny to confront his mother, reminding her of the pain her harsh words caused his father.

As they approach their wedding day, Danny plans to propose to Theresa in a grand gesture from atop a fire truck, capturing the vibrancy of Chicago around them. Yet, Patrick continues to pressure Danny to move to Florida, asserting that he deserves more than what Theresa offers. A sudden loss of a close friend, Doyle, prompts deep self-reflection in Danny, inspiring him to avoid a lonely fate like Doyle’s. He attempts to share his feelings with Theresa but finds himself fleeing from the conversation before it can fully develop.

The anticipated day for their departure to Florida arrives, and Danny shocks himself by opting to leave Rose at the airport, eager to pursue a future with Theresa. Hurt yet understanding, Rose encourages Danny to carve out a life with Theresa before she boards a flight to Florida, creating a moment of emotional connection as her hand brushes against that of Nick.

Meanwhile, Danny discovers that Theresa has traveled to New York City, leading him to enlist the help of a friend in the railroad service to intercept her. With passion and regret, Danny seeks out Theresa and confesses his love, expressing his desire to forge a new life as an NYPD officer in New York City. Though they share mutual affection, Theresa’s worries about Rose’s wellbeing persist. Nonetheless, Danny assures her that her happiness will always take precedence.
