One Magic Christmas 1985

Saint Nicholas assigns the Christmas angel Gideon Harry Dean Stanton to restore the Christmas spirit of Ginnie Grainger Mary Steenburgen, a grocery-store cashier and the mother of Cal Grainger Robbie Magwood and Abbie Grainger Elisabeth Harnois. Their family is pressed by hard times: Jack Grainger Gary Basaraba has been out of work for six months, and they must vacate their company-owned house by the new year. Ginnie holds the fort while Jack tinkers with bikes as a hopeful hobby, dreaming of opening his own shop—an idea she resists because it would drain nearly every penny the family saved. The tension between aspiration and necessity threads through their small, stressed world, where love wrestles with fear and financial strain.

Two nights before Christmas Eve, Abbie meets Gideon while mailing a letter to Santa Claus Jan Rubeš. Gideon asks Abbie to have her mother mail it instead and steps in to shield Abbie from a speeding car. Abbie passes the letter to her mother, but Ginnie stubbornly declines to mail it. The family visits Jack’s grandfather Caleb Grainger Arthur Hill, who gifts Abbie a snow globe of the North Pole. Gideon visits Abbie again, warning that some bad things are going to happen, but that she should not be afraid. He “accidentally” drops and shatters the snow globe, then miraculously restores it. As the family grapples with finances, Ginnie urges Jack to rethink his bike-shop dream, and he heads out for a walk. Ginnie follows and encounters Gideon; at that moment, every Christmas light on the street flickers off, underscoring the fragility of their holiday glow.

On Christmas Eve, Ginnie heads to the grocery store where she works and encounters Harry Dickens Wayne Robson, a man trying to sell belongings to provide for himself and his son. Meanwhile, Jack goes to the bank to withdraw savings for Christmas shopping, leaving Cal and Abbie in his car. Abbie visits Ginnie to relay that Jack is at the bank, and Ginnie leaves to intervene, only to be fired by her boss. She returns Abbie to the car and interrupts Harry as he robs the bank. Jack attempts to calm Harry, but the situation escalates and Harry shoots Jack. He flees in Jack’s car with Cal and Abbie still inside. Ginnie chases in Harry’s car but runs out of gas and the pursuit ends when Harry swerves and crashes into the river. Believing she has lost her husband and children, Ginnie returns home in grief, while Gideon rescues the children and the police bring them back. Ginnie solemnly tells Cal and Abbie that Jack is gone.

Abbie seeks Gideon at the town’s Christmas tree and pleads with him to bring back her father. Gideon explains that this is beyond him and that Santa Claus is the only one who might help. He takes Abbie to the North Pole to see Santa, who admits he cannot repair what happened or soothe her mother’s pain, but suggests Abbie might. Santa shows her his workshop, run by Christmas angels, and retrieves a letter Ginnie wrote as a child, telling Abbie to give it to her mother.

Gideon returns Abbie home, and she delivers the letter to Ginnie. Reading it awakens Ginnie to the true meaning of Christmas—the spirit of gratitude for what she already has. She mails Abbie’s letter and says goodbye to Gideon. The town’s lights flicker back on, and Ginnie glimpses Jack walking through the neighborhood just as he did two days before Christmas.

The next day, Ginn ie’s boss grants her a day off so she can spend it with her family. At a gas station, she buys Harry’s camp stove, sparing him from the bank robbery’s grim conclusion. That evening, the family gathers for the village square tree lighting, joining in the singing of O Christmas Tree. Later, they celebrate at Caleb’s house, and Ginnie writes a check to Jack for the bike shop as a Christmas present. When Santa comes downstairs, he places presents under the tree and quietly says, “Merry Christmas, Ginnie,” a greeting she returns with warmth and relief.
