Husband and wife Will [Jamie Bamber] and Dawn [Stefanie von Pfetten] trek from Vancouver toward a distant town in search of a job that could pull them out of financial ruin. They’re juggling foreclosure on their home and a mounting debt to Dawn’s stern father, and even when Will doesn’t land the gig they hoped for, their resolve to escape their looming fate remains unshaken. The couple’s hopes are slim, but the drive itself becomes a test of their partnership and their willingness to risk everything for a fresh start.

On the bleak highway, circumstances take a sharp turn when they pick up two hitchhikers, Lee [Aleks Paunovic] and Cheryl [Marie Avgeropoulos]. Lee comes off as affable and cooperative, while Cheryl immediately radiates suspicion and hostility. Both hitchhikers hint at a shadowy past and a readiness to bend moral lines, a tension that unsettles Will and Dawn yet also stirs a shared curiosity about what might lie ahead once they reach their destination. The four travelers press on into the night, navigating freeze-dried air and the fragile trust that forms under pressure.

A near-miss in the dark tests the group’s nerves. A man staggers into the road, and Will’s quick braking saves a catastrophe—only for the man to die moments later from hypothermia. In the scramble that follows, Lee pockets a substantial cash haul from the victim’s pockets, a move that sours the group’s mood and raises questions about motives. The dead man’s identity, Cormac Leith, becomes a spark that ignites a new theory: a set of coordinates carved into a pocket note might lead to a stash tied to a bank robbery. The four feign ignorance when questioned by police, and with highway black ice forcing them to linger, they retreat to a motel to wait for safer travel.

Inside the motel bar, Cheryl’s resourceful side takes over as she uncovers more about Cormac Leith—recently released from a lengthy prison sentence and the lone survivor of a gold-heavy bank heist. The revelation shifts the group’s outlook: the shaky possibility of a real payday becomes a tangible plan. Cheryl manages to steal a GPS device, and the coordinates point to a spot only about thirty miles away. The trio’s hunger for money grows louder, and Will and Dawn eventually concede that a treasure hunter’s path could offer a path out of debt, even as the dangers multiply.

By morning, the foursome abandons the motel to chase the coordinates. They embark on a grueling hike toward the site, trudging through terrain that seems designed to break them: subzero wind, slick ice, and the constant threat of unseen danger. The trek drains their strength, and mutual distrust surfaces as they quibble over how to proceed. A hostile stranger lurks on the horizon, and the team must decide whether to push forward or retreat to safety. The brutal cold gnaws at their bodies and spirits, and a night spent in a shaky improvised shelter makes it clear that every step could be their last.

The turn of events darkens when Will recognizes that frostbite and hypothermia are taking their toll. After a fierce argument with Dawn, he elects to turn back, comforted by the thought that staying alive should take precedence over a reckless chase. Dawn, along with Cheryl and Lee, pushes ahead toward the promise of gold, their breath turning to steam in the frigid air as they reach the cache. They manage to load themselves with as much gold as their clothing will permit, savoring a hard-won victory that feels like redemption for their past struggles.

But triumph soon curdles into fraught suspense. Dawn’s determination clashes with Cheryl’s increasingly irrational grip on reality, and in a brutal moment Cheryl lures the group deeper into danger as Dawn chooses to head back toward the road. Cheryl and Lee sink their pace into hauling a heavy chest of coins, slowing their progress and increasing the risk of a fatal misstep. Will, meanwhile, finds a rescue-ready shelter of his own—an abandoned cabin where he discovers that the trapper who lived there had been murdered by Cheryl earlier. The realization jolts him into action: he seizes the trapper’s gun and snowmobile in a desperate bid to reach Dawn before it’s too late.

The chase becomes a chase within a chase. Cheryl, already exhausted, loses consciousness on the way, and Lee—armed with a knife— pursues Dawn across a frozen lake. Will reaches a cliff’s edge and spots Dawn in the distance, but his attempt to shoot Lee ends in a miss. He musters the last of his strength to descend the cliff, only to be knocked unconscious by the fall. Dawn, meanwhile, fights for her life as Lee closes in. She knocks him down, and in a brutal twist of fate, Lee’s head strikes hard and he dies. Dawn, experiencing the paradoxical warmth of late-stage hypothermia, strips away her clothing, an act that seals her fate as she collapses into the freezing wilderness.

Will regains consciousness at the cliff’s base and fires his gun into the air, while Dawn fires a flare in response, a desperate bid to communicate across the void. Their attempts to reach one another are futile, yet they both cling to the belief that rescue could still come. Will is eventually pulled from danger and wakes in a hospital, his body marked by severe frostbite. The news is brutal: Dawn did not survive the ordeal. A police officer records Will’s account and tries to understand why he ventured into the frozen wasteland in the first place. His answer is stark and haunting: “we were looking for gold—did they find it?” The officer’s response is careful, and a quiet revelation follows: gold has indeed been found, not on Will’s side of the mountain but with the bodies of Lee, Cheryl, and Dawn. Cormac Leith’s body is cremated as an unidentified John Doe, and a new plan forms—to pursue the lure of gold once more, this time with new resolve and perhaps better odds.

In the end, the film leaves the door open to a dangerous realism: a fragile humanity, tested by cold, debt, and desperation, can fracture under pressure, yet the spark of possibility—the lure of sudden wealth—continues to pull at those who risk everything for a chance at a different life.
