From time immemorial, there have been Others—humans with supernatural abilities—divided into two ancient camps: the forces of Light and the forces of Dark. In the Middle Ages, their armies clashed, and when neither side gained a clear advantage, the leaders Geser and Zavulon called a truce. To enforce it, each faction formed a police-like order: the Light’s Night Watch and the Dark’s Day Watch, dedicated to keeping the peace and preserving the balance.

The story moves to 1992 Moscow, where a man named Anton Gorodetsky visits a witch named Daria and asks for a powerful spell to bring his wife back to him. He agrees to a harsh condition—she should miscarry a child she is carrying as part of the ritual. Just as the spell nears completion, armed intruders burst in, restrain Daria, and reveal that Anton is himself an Other who can see them. This moment confirms the old truth: the world is a battleground where more is at stake than personal longing.

Fast forward twelve years, and Anton has joined the Night Watch, patrolling a city that hums with quiet, ominous portents. Geser claims these omens point to an ancient prophecy about a particularly formidable Other who could end the stalemate between Light and Dark, but this Other is also likely to lean toward the Dark. As Anton investigates, he stumbles into a tangled web involving a nurse named Svetlana and a mysterious boy named Yegor, both seemingly entwined with the looming catastrophe. The investigation blends personal risk with cosmic stakes, forcing him to weigh duty to the world against the pull of family and fate.

The climax arrives when Anton confronts a planetary-scale danger: a dangerous storm that could devastate Moscow. He discovers Svetlana possesses extraordinary power and begins teaching her how to control it, a decision that underscores the film’s recurring theme—the responsibility that comes with extraordinary gifts. Yet the revelation that Yegor is Anton’s own son shatters his earlier assumptions: his wife’s pregnancy during the botched spell means the child is literally a product of his misjudgments. The news unsettles Yegor, turning him away from his father and toward Zavulon, a twist that aligns with Zavulon’s longer plan to seize control of the prophecy.

In the aftermath, Anton confronts Zavulon, the antagonist whose scheming seemed to portend the Dark’s victory. He lashes out in a moment of raw rage, but the voice-over narration reaffirms a stubborn resolve: even as prophecy unfolds and the shadows lengthen, he will not surrender. The film closes on a note of hard-won resilience, with Anton choosing to keep fighting for a future where the balance between Light and Dark can still be steered, even if the odds are steep and the path is fraught with personal cost.
