As they press toward New Orleans, they glimpse their stolen car on the road and pursue the thieves. They reach the train station and head toward Baton Rouge, where Billie receives a call suggesting her husband may be returning home. She leaves Jane and Joey behind at the station, choosing a new path for herself.

In Baton Rouge, as Jane approaches her son’s communion, she fears she might not recognize him seven years after her coma. Joey encourages her to sing, and when she does, the sound guides her toward her son—who steps forward, and the moment of recognition finally arrives.

Back in Kansas, a final scene unfolds by a lake. Jane and Joey sit together while her son and his adoptive family arrive for a visit.
