Born in the Welsh valleys in 1945, young Howard emerges as an exceptional student, his academic performance soaring above the national standards of the UK. His impressive abilities earn him a scholarship to Oxford University at the age of nineteen, where he immerses himself in philosophy and physics. However, fate intervenes on one unexpected night while he studies alone in his dorm room. There, he meets Ilze Kadegis, a captivating and free-spirited foreign exchange student from Latvia, played by Elsa Pataky. In her quest for a secret passage within the university’s maze-like corridors, she unexpectedly enters Marks’s life. Intrigued, he follows Kadegis into a hidden storage area owned by the notorious marijuana dealer Graham Plinson, enacted by Jack Huston. It is within this clandestine setting that Kadegis introduces Marks to cannabis for the first time, igniting a hedonistic spree that leads to his neglect of studies.

As the years pass, the group’s activities take a dark turn when Plinson introduces them to LSD, culminating in the tragic overdose of Joshua Macmillan, a wealthy heir and close friend of Marks. This heart-wrenching incident leaves Marks with a grim awareness of the grave dangers of substance abuse. In a moment of reckless abandon, he inflicts a painful wound on himself in a bid to reaffirm his commitment to avoiding drugs—at least the more severe types. In a whirlwind of events, the trio enrolls in teacher training courses at the University of London in 1967, during which Marks hastily marries Kadegis amidst the chaos of their lives. However, fractures in their relationship become apparent almost immediately, leading Marks down a path of despair, apathy, and paranoia regarding Kadegis’s fidelity. Simultaneously, his rebellious nature attracts trouble at the university due to his extravagant hairstyle and flamboyant attire.

As challenges mount for Plinson’s hashish smuggling operation, Marks seizes a fortuitous opportunity. Driven by desperation, he embarks on a risky venture to Germany, commandeering a vehicle laden with illicit substances and cleverly navigating customs by exploiting his anonymity. The exhilaration of outsmarting the authorities delivers an intoxicating rush—described by Marks as a transcendent experience, distinct from any sexual enjoyment.

Successfully unloading the drugs in London, Marks quickly amasses wealth after selling his haul to the enigmatic Arab oil sheik Saleem Malik, played by Omid Djalili. This newfound affluence and the adrenaline rush further entrench him into the thrilling and perilous world of high-stakes cannabis trafficking. As his criminal empire grows, Marks finds himself at odds with terrorist factions and government agencies, ultimately landing behind bars in one of America’s toughest prisons in 1988.

Fast-forwarding to the present, Marks has transformed into a charismatic media personality and a cult hero, his notorious background amplifying the allure of his rebellious journey. Despite the myriad challenges faced along the way, Marks’ indomitable spirit and resourcefulness have enabled him to thrive, navigating a life where cunning and resilience are key to survival.
