After the defeat of Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat, Earthrealm has undergone a drastic transformation, now largely devastated by a relentless wave of undead revenants that have turned it into a barren wasteland scattered with isolated cities. That city becomes the battleground where a young, confident warrior named Kenshi Takahashi—who is briefly described with the full name by the characters—stands his ground. Despite their initial threat, Kenshi’s combat skills prove formidable as he defeats Kira, Kobra, and Kabal in a fierce fight and, surprisingly, spares their lives, allowing them to retreat. These enemies later return, accompanied by the powerful Tremor and the sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung, who has grown older yet more treacherous.

When Kenshi introduces himself fully and his surname Takahashi catches the attention of Shang Tsung, the sorcerer’s obsession sparks a deeper interest. During a confrontation, Kenshi is defeated by Tremor, but Shang Tsung intervenes to prevent his execution, sensing potential in the young warrior. Disguised under the alias “Song,” Shang Tsung tells Kenshi about a legendary and mystical sword called “Sento” that possesses the power to defeat the Black Dragon. Driven by this promise, Kenshi ventures into a treacherous desert where he discovers the Well of Souls, a source of immense energy.

This artifact, which Kano had previously used to create an alternate timeline in which the revenant invasion was unleashed, holds devastating power.
