In the quiet town of Chestnut Hills, California, a chilling pattern emerges: three residents are found murdered inside their closets, all at the hands of an unseen, predatory presence. A San Francisco-based reporter named Richard Clark, hungry for a breakthrough story, catches wind of the slayings through his sharp-witted rival Scoop Johnson. Driven by ambition, Richard heads to Chestnut Hills to uncover the truth and expose whatever is terrorizing the community.

On arrival, Richard crosses paths with Diane Bennett, a dedicated biology teacher who lives with her young son, known simply as Professor. As the investigation unfolds, the pair work alongside Sheriff Sam Ketchem to piece together the mystery. The first major turning point occurs at the local sorority house, where investigators probe the scene and attempt to understand the killer’s method. A nearby witness adds another layer of fear: a woman who, from the next apartment over, watches in horror as her husband is killed by a creature lurking in their closet, leaving behind a gruesome clue — a large, jagged claw found near the victim’s body.

The claw becomes a crucial lead when Diane, impressed by the fragment Richard uncovers, takes it to her colleague, Dr. Pennyworth, to seek expert analysis. That same night, Richard accepts an invitation to dinner at Diane’s home, bringing along Professor, Dr. Pennyworth, and Father Finnegan, Diane’s priestly brother. The dinner is interrupted by distant screams from a neighboring house, as locals report a monster on the loose. Authorities arrive and confront an enormous, scaly intruder that bursts from the house, murdering Ketchem in cold blood. Bullets prove futile against the creature’s apparent invulnerability, forcing law enforcement to retreat while the monster escapes into the night.

News of the monster’s rampage spreads quickly, prompting a town-wide lockdown and a military response. Pennyworth suggests a creative approach: use a glockenspiel to attempt to communicate with the creature, a plan that leads Richard, Diane, Pennyworth, and Father Finnegan to venture into danger, hoping to avert further bloodshed. They are joined, somewhat reluctantly, by Scoop, who has ridden into town hoping to celebrate Richard’s supposed triumph. Their expedition is halted when they are stopped by a soldier and rebuked by General Turnbull, who questions their presence. The risk becomes personal when the monster closes in on the local elementary school, endangering Professor.

In a tense sequence, the group realizes the danger extends beyond the immediate town: the monster’s path points toward a larger stage, and their ally, Professor, is at risk. The army closes in, but Pennyworth’s insistence on keeping the creature alive for study clashes with military orders, leading him to a reckless confrontation with the monster that ends in his death. The army fires again, and the creature miraculously survives, prompting a swift evacuation as Chestnut Hills begins to empty.

Diane proposes a potential weakness: electricity. After learning that the creature’s claw is largely composed of electrons, she shares her hypothesis with General Turnbull, who remains skeptical but skeptical curiosity gives way to a desperate plan. Richard and Diane retreat to Diane’s home to stage a makeshift trap using scrap metal and electric wires. They barely manage to lure the beast into the trap, but the monster proves resistant to the electricity, shattering the setup and sending the couple scrambling to safety in the attic.

As the town continues to flee, Diane makes a high-stakes decision and appears on live television, urging viewers to destroy their closets to prevent any possibility of revival. Meanwhile, the creature travels to San Francisco and abducts Richard, dragging him into the Transamerica Pyramid, the only location with a closet still intact. The monster’s effort to fit both himself and Richard inside fails, and with dwindling energy, it staggers out of the building.

In a final bid, the community and the authorities converge to rescue the remaining victims, while Richard’s fate hangs in the balance. The situation culminates in a dramatic realization and a poignant line that underscores the film’s mood: a reporter’s remark about the closets being the creature’s undoing is met with Father Finnegan’s quiet, fatalistic reply, “Oh, no.
