Don Luis Montoya [Albert Dekker] marries in New York and brings his bride, Jean Montoya [Mari Blanchard], back to Puerto Rico, unaware that she wed him only for his money. Their friends at a San Juan honeymoon hotel recognize her as a notorious party girl, so Jean begs her husband to take her home immediately, even before the marriage is consummated.

At the plantation, Jean’s arrival is met with distrust from Luis’s longtime aide and confidant, Carlos [Carlos Rivas], and from Luis’s cousin, Miguel [Lee Van Cleef], who help run the business. A drunken Miguel insults Jean and is slapped by Carlos. In retaliation, Miguel later attacks Carlos with a machete.

Luis orders Miguel to leave, but Miguel sabotages the cane-cutting machinery and is later invited back to repair it. Meanwhile, Jean has fallen in love with Carlos, which sows seeds of suspicion in Miguel and in Luis about the two of them. When Luis catches the pair in a compromising moment, he chastises Carlos and then forcibly takes his new wife.

Miguel retaliates by setting fire to the sugar field. Believing that Jean is fleeing with Carlos, Luis pursues them with his machete and comes perilously close to dying in the blaze when Carlos arrives to rescue him. Miguel is killed with the machete, and Jean dies during the ensuing chaos.
