In the morning of 1992, Baskhar is taken by CBI officials to Colaba branch of Magadha Bank for interrogation about alleged embezzlement. The interrogation unravels the real story through flashbacks as Baskhar recounts his actions and motivations. The narration frequently breaks the fourth wall, giving his commentary on events.

Life as a bank cashier and family struggles

Three years earlier, Baskhar works as a cashier at Magadha Bank, one of the few private banks left after nationalization. He also helps uneducated people with cheques and forms for a small fee. At home, he lives with Sumathi, their son Karthik, and his paralysed father Prahalad, whose own past financial scam haunts the family.

Desperation leads to embezzlement and deal with Anthony

Facing humiliation from a creditor and with money tight, Baskhar steals two lakh from bank deposits and gives it to Anthony to clear illegally imported televisions at the port. He and Samba, a bank peon, manage to release the shipments and make a profit, using the money to cover debts. This act marks Baskhar’s first step into a dangerous criminal pattern.

First wave of shipments and debt relief

Following the initial theft, more shipments arrive over the months, enabling Baskhar to repay creditors and gradually improve his family's financial situation. The growing cash flow lets him buy into a better lifestyle and reduce the immediate pressures at home. The crime begins to redefine his status within the bank and his own self-image.

Last shipment planned: three foreign cars and ten lakhs

Anthony plans one final shipment before leaving the trade: three foreign cars with a ten lakh payment. Baskhar hesitates at first, but his joy for his son's happiness and the prospect of a better life pushes him to proceed. The risk escalates as the operation becomes more elaborate.

Goa weekend: masquerade and evasion

During a weekend in Goa, they masquerade as government cars using fake politicians played by beggars and an exotic dancer to pass checkpoints. They succeed in getting through and Baskhar manages to return the money, but the scheme draws attention to the fraud behind the scenes. The authorities later arrest the original buyers' managers, which clears the way for Baskhar's promotion.

Promotion and stopping smuggling

With the arrest of the bank managers for their own fraudulent activity, Baskhar is promoted to assistant general manager, raising his salary. Samba continues in the smuggling business while Baskhar stops. This marks a turning point where greed begins to wane but new temptations emerge.

Harsha Mehra's scheme and stock market manipulation

As AGM, Baskhar learns that businessman Harsha Mehra uses illicit money to manipulate the stock market and keeps quiet through bribery. He makes a deal with Katari Bank's broker Suraj to launder receipts in exchange for a cut and stock tips. He then leverages a windfall lottery ticket and Sumathi's home foods business to legitimize his income.

Sumathi discovers the front; Prahalad's warning

Prahalad breaks his silence and warns Baskhar about the consequences of greed, revealing that he knew of the scam. Sumathi overhears Baskhar's schemes and learns the food business is a front. She destroys the business in anger, prompting Baskhar to rethink his choices.

Baskhar's humility and reconciliation with Sumathi

Baskhar withdraws from the high-risk schemes and makes amends with Sumathi, working to restore trust in the family. He becomes more humble and re-centers his values after witnessing Sumathi's anger. Their relationship begins to recover as he prioritizes family over greed.
