Opening night and backstage tensions

At a New York City burlesque theatre, Dixie Daisy becomes an audience favorite with her singing and striptease act. Backstage she has mixed interactions with other performers, some catty and jealous, others friendly, especially Gee Gee Graham. Comic Biff Brannigan tries to get friendly with her, but Dixie rebuffs him, wary from past experiences with comics.

Police raid and an attempted strangling

During a police raid on the theatre for violating public decency laws, the backstage lights go out and someone tries to strangle Dixie, but a stagehand intercepts the attack. The confusion reveals the tension between performers and the risk of violence backstage.

Bailouts and a plan to keep the company together

After the raid, a number of performers and crew are jailed, but the theatre's owner and producer S.B. Foss bails them out and awards each a share in the company to keep them from leaving. The move stabilizes the troupe while the scandal simmers.

Lolita LaVerne is found murdered

A few nights later, Lolita LaVerne is found strangled with a g-string after a violent argument with her boyfriend, gangster Louie Grindero. The killer’s methods hint at a depraved, theatrical landscape behind the glitter. The murder shocks the performers and signals a widening danger.

Investigation begins and the missing weapon

As the police investigation starts, the g-string believed to be the murder weapon goes missing, deepening the mystery. A number of suspects—from inside the theatre to outsiders—come under scrutiny, including Dixie herself.

Coroner’s ruling and a hidden clue

The coroner reveals that Lolita's death was actually due to poison, not strangulation. Meanwhile, Biff explains that he had hidden the g-string after someone slipped it into his pocket, earning Dixie’s appreciation but raising further questions.

Biff is arrested and released

Stacchi confronts Dixie

Dixie stays behind as everyone else leaves for the night; the aged stagehand Stacchi appears, confesses to the murders, and tries to strangle Dixie. The confrontation heightens the peril and reveals a killer hiding in plain sight.

A trap is sprung; killer revealed

Police and Biff burst in and rescue Dixie, revealing that Dixie and her friend Gee Gee had planned to trap the killer. The staged confrontation becomes a critical turning point in catching the culprit.

Motives exposed

Biff explains that Stacchi was Lolita’s grandfather, driven to insanity by his hatred of burlesque performers. With the motive clarified, the case moves toward closure and the killer’s identity is solidified.
