Spoilers ahead

Set on the Earth-like world of Eos, Kingsglaive unfolds parallel to the events of Final Fantasy XV. The kingdom of Lucis is protected from the technologically superior Niflheim Empire by a magical barrier called the Wall, powered by a sacred Crystal and the hereditary Ring of the Lucii. To maintain peace, King Regis Lucis Caelum CXIII agrees to a treaty involving the marriage of his son, Prince Noctis, to Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. However, this peace is fragile; an assassination attempt in Tenebrae leaves Queen Sylva dead and the region under Niflheim’s control.

Twelve years later, the Kingsglaive—an elite military unit of immigrants—defends the borders. Among them is Nyx Ulric, a soldier who often risks his life for his comrades, including his friend Libertus. Tension rises within the unit as Regis grows weaker with age and considers a peace offer from Chancellor Ardyn Izunia, leading some soldiers to feel betrayed. The situation spirals into chaos when Lunafreya is abducted by General Glauca, and Niflheim launches a surprise invasion of the capital city, Insomnia.

During the onslaught, the Niflheim army destroys the Wall and captures the Crystal. In a desperate struggle, Regis battles Glauca, eventually sacrificing his life to ensure Nyx and Lunafreya can escape. As the city falls to Daemons and Imperial forces, Nyx faces a betrayal by the rebel Luche Lazarus. In a final act of heroism, Nyx puts on the Ring of the Lucii. Although he is not of the royal bloodline, his unwavering resolve convinces the spirits of past kings to grant him their power, though at the cost of his own life.

Nyx engages Glauca in a massive battle, animating the city’s ancient statues to fight off the invaders. After mortally wounding Glauca, Nyx passes away, leaving a final wish for Prince Noctis to rule the future kingdom well. The story concludes with Lunafreya taking the Ring to find Noctis, leading directly into the opening scenes of Final Fantasy XV.
