On the small New England resort of Amity Island, the summer crowds are the town’s lifeblood, shaping every decision from the beachfront to the police station. One night, during a lively beach bonfire, a young woman named Chrissie Watkins Susan Backlinie slips away with a drunken companion and heads out for a late swim. Far from the party, she disappears beneath the waves, and her body is later found washed ashore, casting a pall over the holiday mood.

Police chief Martin Brody [Roy Scheider] is the first to investigate, noticing the brutal precision of the attack and sensing a danger that the town isn’t ready to face. The local coroner’s initial verdict is grim, but pressure from the town’s leaders quickly reshapes the narrative. Mayor Larry Vaughn [Murray Hamilton] fears that calling a halt to beachgoers right before the Fourth of July would devastate Amity’s economy, and under political pressure the coroner revises Chrissie’s death to a boating accident. The beaches reopen, and the summer crowds surge back, even as Brody’s unease deepens.

The dread becomes personal when a second tragedy strikes in full view of the crowded shore. A local boy, Alex Kintner [Jeffrey Voorhees], enters the water on a yellow inflatable raft, and the unseen predator strikes again, leaving panic in its wake and forcing the town to confront the undeniable horror of a man-eating shark. With witnesses mounting, the town finally accepts the threat, and a $3,000 bounty is posted by Alex’s grieving mother, igniting a frenzy of amateur hunters and escalating the sense that safety is slipping away.

At a town meeting, an eccentric and hardened fisherman named Quint [Robert Shaw] dramatically offers to kill the shark for $10,000. His proposal is met with skepticism, but the growing fear and the mounting cases force the town to act. After much hesitation, Vaughn relents and gives Brody the go-ahead to hire Quint, with Brody insisting on accompanying the mission together with Hooper [Richard Dreyfuss], a scientist who specializes in marine life. The three men set sail aboard Quint’s weathered boat, the Orca, and head into deeper, more dangerous waters in a bid to end the terror plaguing Amity Island.

On the open sea, the hunt unfolds with a brutal, almost cat-and-mouse rhythm. Quint lures the shark with chum and then harpoons it, anchoring heavy barrels that serve to tire the creature and track its movements. The shark proves an astonishingly powerful adversary, repeatedly pulling the barrels underwater and ramming the Orca, testing each man’s resolve as the waves crash and the tension rises.

Below deck, the men share stories and scars, forging a rough camaraderie born of danger. Quint reveals one of his scarred memories—an emblem of battles with the sea that hints at the ferocity of the hunt—but the human cost of the pursuit weighs heavily on all three. The ordeal pushes them to the brink, with Hooper surviving a perilous moment and returning to the surface, a mix of relief and exhaustion marking his face.

When they finally reach the end of their endurance, Brody and Hooper make it back to shore aboard the last of the floating barrels, bringing an end to the fear that has gripped Amity Island. The town’s horizons once again widen with possibility, but the memory of the terror—the sudden, silent threat beneath the water—lingers in the minds of all who lived through the summer that tested them.
