He recovers its black box and merges the logs with his own recorder. The data exposes that the Consolidation of Iron already knew a vast hivemind creature inhabited the ocean and kept authorizing missions anyway. It also ties the place to the Quiet Rapture, the catastrophe in which the stars and inhabited planets vanished: the ocean is not merely an unexplored resource but part of something that appears to have harvested worlds. Ava finally admits she cannot extract Simon. Soon afterward the entity destroys her vessel, cutting off his only human contact and any realistic possibility of rescue.
