Ramya / Varna, portrayed by Anushka Shetty, threads two fates across two distant worlds, blending a patient Earthbound love story with a mythic, otherworldly romance. On Earth, Ramya is a kind-hearted medical student who harbors a crush on the academically inclined Madhu Balakrishnan, Arya. Their dynamic starts with a hesitant spark: Madhu initially refuses marriage because his aging father requires his presence and care. Over time, his respect for Ramya’s warmth grows into genuine affection, and he begins to see a life with her as possible. Yet Ramya’s family has already arranged a match for her, and she reluctantly declines his proposal. A turning point arrives when Madhu, during a Goa trip, wins Ramya’s heart anew only to watch her fiancé walk away over a dowry dispute. The heartbreak intensifies when Ramya dies in a freak accident, quickly followed by the death of Madhu’s paralysed father, throwing him into a deep abyss of grief.

In the wake of these twin losses, Madhu becomes a drifting figure in Goa, haunted by a vision of his late father who tells him that death is an illusion. The wounded artist in him pushes toward the edge, and he follows an empty car on a hilltop, attempting to end his life after a devastating sequence of personal tragedies. His fall from the road and the emotional wreckage form a bridge to a second tale that unfolds on a distant planet.

In parallel, a relatively primitive kingdom shelters the immortal Amma and centers on Maravan, the fearless son of a noble military commander. Maravan falls for Varna, a working-class orphan who survives by foraging wild mushrooms and dreams of a military career. Varna’s fierce spirit and resolve to protect Amma set her apart, even as the tyrant king condemns her to his harem. Maravan pleads with the monarch to release Varna, and the king challenges him to fetch a lion’s skin within three days. Undaunted, Maravan confronts a legendary lion and, against the odds, wins Varna’s freedom. The king’s coercive power soon turns Varna’s fate toward marriage, a union she resists, culminating in a desperate act that leads Amma to intervene and Varna to be exiled into the forest. Maravan, heartbreak-struck, also contemplates suicide, and he climbs a sacred mountain called Swamimalai in a bid to escape the pain.

A miraculous moment shifts the narrative: Amma’s powers open an inter-planetary portal that briefly connects Maravan’s Swamimalai with Madhu’s Goa. In a dramatic turn, Maravan rescues the fainting Madhu from the car and brings him to Amma for treatment. The people of the kingdom perceive Madhu as an angel, an event that solidifies the bond between the two continents’ stories. When enemies threaten Amma, Maravan fights valiantly, aided by Varna’s return from the forest. The moment Madhu sees Varna—who strikingly resembles Ramya—flowers bloom throughout the kingdom for the first time, yet fear and timidity among the people force Varna back into exile. Maravan earns a place in military service, and with newfound confidence, he ventures into the forest to meet Varna, offering food and blankets. Varna rejects him again, while Madhu also ventures into the forest to reconnect. A fragile friendship begins to form between Varna and Madhu, but jealousy flares in Maravan as he witnesses Madhu’s bond with Varna.

A stormy night complicates the trio’s fragile dynamic, and Varna returns to the kingdom while Amma is captured by enemies. Maravan is ordered to execution for housing Varna illegally, yet he remains defiant and is eventually captured by the invaders. Madhu and Varna set off through the forest to locate Maravan and Amma, and Varna comes to a realization about her love for Maravan after hearing about Ramya. The siblings’ courage culminates in a daring rescue: Maravan defeats the encroaching forces, and the trio escapes with Amma by boat. In a climactic turn, Madhu drowns in combat, and Amma’s intervention halts Varna and Maravan from sacrificing themselves for him. When another inter-planetary portal briefly reopens, Madhu lands on an unnamed exoplanet and encounters Ramya’s look-alike once more. He asks if she is single, and, through this reunion of souls, he understands his true destiny.

Across these two worlds, Irandam Ulagam weaves a tale of longing, resilience, and fate, where love is tested by duty, society, and a cosmic connection that transcends space.
