What Is Indiscreet About?

The premise of Indiscreet in 325 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

In a world where the promise of a new year feels like a fresh script, Geraldine “Gerry” Trent is determined to rewrite her own story. A charismatic socialite with a quick wit, she navigates a scene of elegant parties, bustling cafés, and the ever‑present chatter of the city’s well‑heeled circles. The tone is light‑hearted and buoyant, a romantic comedy that revels in clever banter and the occasional misstep that threatens to upend a carefully curated life.

Gerry’s circle offers both support and complication. Her former lover, Jim Woodward, remains a lingering presence, while her confidant, Buster Collins, introduces her to the charismatic author Tony Blake, whose philosophical musings on impulse spark an instant connection. At home, the sage advice of Aunt Kate adds a layer of familial expectation, and the arrival of Gerry’s younger sister, Joan Trent, fresh from her studies abroad, introduces fresh dynamics that ripple through the household. Each relationship is sketched with a playful tone, hinting at underlying currents without revealing their depths.

Beneath the sparkling exterior, Gerry carries a secret from a previous indiscretion, a mistake that now threatens to surface at the most inopportune moment. The narrative teases the tension between her desire for a bright, uncomplicated future and the weight of her past, drawing the audience into a delicate dance of confession, concealment, and the fear of losing something—or someone—dear. The film’s atmosphere balances the exhilaration of newfound romance with the nervous anticipation of inevitable truth’s arrival.

As the story unfolds, Gerry stands at a crossroads, caught between the allure of a promising love and the lingering shadow of her hidden past. The audience is invited to wonder how she will reconcile these forces, whether she will protect her blossoming romance by keeping the secret safe, or risk everything for honesty. The film glimmers with the promise of witty resolutions, heartfelt choices, and the timeless question of how much one can truly reinvent oneself without leaving the past behind.

Determined to start the new year off right, Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Trent Gloria Swanson sends her unfaithful boyfriend, Jim Woodward Monroe Owsley, packing. A short time later, her friend Buster Collins Arthur Lake introduces her to author Tony Blake Ben Lyon. Gerry loves Tony’s book, Obey That Impulse, and finds him attractive as well. Tony immediately proposes marriage. Gerry just laughs, but together they have a lot of fun acting out Tony’s theory, and she soon realizes that she loves and wants to marry him. First, though, she feels she must tell him about her affair with Jim despite dire warnings from her Aunt Kate Maude Eburne.

Although he’s upset by the news, Tony still wants to marry her.

The next day, Gerry’s sister Joan Trent Barbara Kent arrives home from school in France, where, unknown to Gerry, she has fallen in love with Jim. When Gerry finds out, she warns Jim to stay away from her sister, but he doesn’t take the situation seriously and invites everyone to his parents’ house party. Initially, Gerry refuses to go, but when she finds out that business will prevent Tony from attending, she decides to go after all and keep an eye on Joan. Desperate to break Joan’s engagement, Gerry first pretends to be a little crazy. When this doesn’t work, she pretends she is still in love with Jim. While the two of them are alone together, she signals to Joan for help by singing a special song. Joan comes to her aid only to see Gerry and Jim embracing. Unfortunately, so does Tony, who has arrived at the last minute. Heartbroken, Gerry returns home, where Aunt Kate convinces her to pursue Tony who is sailing for Europe. After she leaves, Tony shows up at her apartment, saying he loves Gerry and wants to get back together with her. Aunt Kate tells him to go find her at the boat.
