In 1944, in the rugged countryside of Northern Italy, the peaceful village of Reanoto is crushed when the SS, under the order of Major Taussig, massacres everyone for helping the Italian resistance. The massacre leaves a handful of young survivors—a tight-knit group aged 7 to 14—led by Aldo, who watch their families and neighbors die and vow to exact revenge on their aggressors.

That same night, a small detachment of US Army paratroopers descends into the area with a crucial mission: to destroy a strategic dam before the Fifth Army advances. Their drop zone is quickly exposed by German forces commanded by Hauptmann von Hecht, who kill all but the detachment’s leader, Captain Turner, as he crashes and clings to a tree branch. The invading troops’ demolition equipment is seized by the Germans, setting the stage for a brutal cat-and-mouse game.

Aldo and his friends intervene, rescuing Turner and guiding him away from danger. Realizing that Turner needs medical attention, they kidnap the German doctor Bianca Freedling to nurse him back to health, and they keep her captive even after he recovers. As Turner regroups, Aldo—possessed by a burning desire for vengeance—begins to press Turner into teaching him and the other boys how to handle weapons and battlefield tactics. Turner sees a second chance to complete the sabotage mission, and he decides to use the boys as his new unit, guiding them through the dangerous task ahead. The group steals the captured demolition gear from von Hecht’s headquarters, and in the process, they kill SS Rottenführer Gunther, though Aldo carefully hides the detonators for a more decisive strike later.

Turner trains the boys in the use of German MP 40 submachine guns and other combat techniques, turning their improvised group into a dangerous little force. They make a reconnaissance mission to the dam, where the doctor’s presence adds tension to the dynamic of trust and fear. At one point Bianca, in a moment of desperation, lunges with a pair of scissors in an attempt to harm Turner, and then runs toward a passing German armored car. Turner drags her into cover, and the encounter ends with a horrific act that indelibly marks the mission: he rapes her.

The hunt is on. Standartenführer Jannings is tasked with wiping out Turner and the “Dead End Kids,” while von Hecht is placed under Taussig’s command and much of his regular Wehrmacht troops are reassigned to guard a tunnel. Undeterred, Turner and the boys-turned-commandos launch a bold assault on SS headquarters, slaughtering many of Taussig’s men and breaking the German lines. Aldo, however, grows increasingly unhinged as the body count rises, driven by the lure of continued killing. In the heat of the action, he and a few of the older boys surge ahead to engage guards atop the dam, and the situation becomes dangerously personal.

The conflict reaches a fever pitch as von Hecht survives the dam assault and returns to pursue Turner. While Turner and a handful of the boys plant Composition C charges on the dam, Aldo and others ignore orders and press into direct combat with the German guards on the dam’s top. The confrontation underscores Aldo’s downward spiral as he takes control of an MG 42 and becomes a torrent of violence, even firing on his own friend Carlo when Carlo blocks his shot. The battle continues until the explosives are planted, and the dam is detonated, unleashing a flood that sweeps through the valley and disables the German advance.

As the dust settles and American troops begin moving in, Turner learns of Carlo’s death and another boy’s heroic sacrifice—protecting Bianca and the younger children. He is wracked with guilt for having dragged the children into such danger and lowers his guard, discarding most of the weapons he had taught them to use. Aldo, consumed by a personal vendetta, resists giving up his weapon and confronts von Hecht, who has somehow survived the destruction of the dam. Turner arrives just in time to intervene, stopping Aldo’s attempt to finish the officer and taking von Hecht prisoner instead.

With the dam breached and German resistance in retreat, Turner, Bianca, von Hecht, and the surviving boys (except for Aldo) move toward the awaiting American troops. Aldo lingers, casting wary glances back at the wreckage of his past and the man who saved him from his own worst impulses. When Turner returns for him, Aldo initially lashes out with rocks, but the moment of reckoning comes as Turner offers forgiveness. In a final, quiet gesture of mercy, Turner lifts the frightened boy into his arms and carries him toward the waiting truck, leaving behind a fragile sense of hope that vengeance can give way to a future beyond revenge.
