On the day of the engagement, an accident shatters his plans and he mistakenly strays into the Pakistani side of Kashmir, where rising India-Pakistan tensions add a heavy layer of danger to every move he makes. In this tense borderland, a native girl named Henna Zeba Bakhtiar falls in love with him, and his presence immediately triggers suspicion among the Pakistani authorities who mistake him for an Indian spy.

Henna Khan lives a transient life near the river Jhelum, in Pakistan, with her widowed father Khan Baba Saeed Jaffrey and three brothers—Ashraf Kiran Kumar, Razzak Dilip Dhawan, and Zaman. One day, she encounters an unconscious man who has washed ashore. Khan Baba, the village doctor Gul Bibi Farida Jalal, and Henna take him in and nurse him back to health, only to discover that he has lost his memory. In his sleep, he whispers the name “Chand,” and from then on everyone calls him by that nickname.

Chand begins to help Gul Bibi with her work, making clay pots, and Henna blossoms with affection for him, hoping for a future together. This budding love is watched closely by Shahbaaz Khan [Raza Murad], a stubborn police official who has already been married twice and, under Shariat law, could marry twice more, adding personal stakes to the unfolding drama. To secure a life for Henna, Khan Baba arranges a marriage between Henna and Chand; a date is set, and the community prepares for a joyful union.

But memory returns in a rush. Chandar reveals his true identity: he is Indian, not Pakistani, and his name is Chandar, not Chand. The realization sets a plan in motion to find a safe passage for him back home. Their effort to cross the border is tested twice. The first attempt is foiled when one of Henna’s brothers colludes with Shahbaaz Khan, derailing the escape. The second attempt finally succeeds, but not without cost—Henna loses her life in the ensuing chaos.
