Seven friends—Xuelian, Zengliang, Huazi, Haojian, Ningmeng, Xiaotian, and Dudu—are en route to a friend’s wedding when they stumble upon the aftermath of a highway accident. Instead of stopping to help the injured, they go about their own business until their car breaks down, forcing them to seek shelter at a desolate road stop. Throughout the film, Xuelian delivers pointed monologues about her companions: they come across as emotionally unavailable toward the victim, they seem to measure love primarily through sexual experience, and they reveal their true feelings only when conflicts arise. With no staff present at the stop, the group decides to stay the night and make it a makeshift camp.

Dudu, the single food-lover of the group, is dared to snap a selfie across the road, a moment that sets off a chilling chain of events. As darkness falls and lights go out one by one, Dudu bolts to the service store to escape a pursuing ghost, while back at the main area, Xiaotian is induced by Zengliang to steal food and drinks, and in the process he swipes money from the counter and the victim’s savings. His triumph is short-lived: the celebratory mood is broken when the ghost closes in, and Xiaotian is killed in the ensuing pursuit.

With Dudu missing and the group rattled, Xuelian and Haojian decide to search for her. In the meantime, Haojian confesses his love for Xuelian, but she is not swayed and remains focused on the search. They are joined by the lovestruck Ningmeng, who harbors unrequited feelings for Haojian, while Zengliang and Huazi become intimate in the garage, their relationship unfolding amid the tense, ominous atmosphere around them. The trio eventually discovers Dudu’s body in the cafeteria, a discovery that triggers panic and a fatal moment for Ningmeng, who is strangled by the ghost using tight cloths and a clothesline wire.

The heart of the group’s crisis deepens when Zengliang and Huazi regroup with the others after finding Xiaotian’s body in the restroom. In a moment of crisis and blame, Haojian lashes out, attempting to kill the others and injuring Zengliang’s knee, only to be subdued by Xuelian and left to be claimed by the ghost. The surviving members realize that the deaths have been foreshadowed by the sequence of ominous photos that have been sent to them, each image tethering one survivor to the fate of another: Dudu’s image is sent to Xiaotian, Xiaotian’s to Zengliang, Ningmeng’s to Huazi, and Haojian’s to Xuelian. In a frantic effort to escape, they try to start a stray car in the garage but fail.

The tension escalates when Huazi grows jealous of Xuelian’s care for Zengliang. He fabricates a cursed photo and attacks Xuelian with a ratchet spanner, a blow that seems to kill her. The couple manages to leave the compound, but Huazi breaks his leg in the bushes, leaving him vulnerable. As the two are left to their own fates, Huazi is killed by the ghost, and Zengliang rejoins a severely wounded Xuelian. He then abandons her to her fate on the road, only to fall prey to the vengeful spirit himself.

Left alone on the road, Xuelian faces the apparition and confronts a devastating truth: she is the car accident victim. Abused and tormented since childhood, she reached a breaking point when her boyfriend left her for another woman. She attempted suicide by veering off the highway, but survived. The surrounding events are revealed as her near-death experiences, while the six “friends” who surrounded her were really strangers who chose to intervene after witnessing the crash. Her earlier monologues are reframed as her introspective reflections on trauma and trust. In the final moment, the ghost’s presence dissolves into a quiet acceptance as Xuelian acknowledges that the six strangers helped her escape the darkness and the negative views she had long held about the world.

What begins as a suspenseful horrror-thriller unfolds into a meditation on trauma, connection, and perception. The film maintains a restrained, eerie tone while tracing how a single traumatic event can ripple through a person’s psyche, reshaping relationships and altering the meaning of every encounter. The twist recontextualizes the entire night, turning a simple road-stop mystery into a meditation on recovery, forgiveness, and the possibility of finding light after profound pain.
