In the remote countryside, a grieving mother and her two daughters inherit a solitary house left to them by a distant aunt. The property, tucked away among tangled woods and shadowed by the weight of family history, becomes a fragile refuge where the past and present press together. Pauline, still mourning her loss, attempts to rebuild a sense of normalcy within the old walls, while her teenage daughters, Beth and Vera, each carry their own quiet burdens.
The house itself feels alive with the echo of memories, its creaking floors and dimly lit rooms serving as a canvas for lingering sorrow and unspoken fears. The family dynamic is a delicate balance: Pauline strives to protect her girls, Beth seeks to understand the strange undercurrents that surround them, and Vera grapples with an unsettling unease that refuses to fade. Their interactions are tinged with a mix of affection and tension, as the trio navigates the thin line between healing and the pull of unseen forces that seem to linger in every corner.
Sixteen years later, the sisters return as adults, drawn back to the house that shaped their childhood. Their reunion awakens dormant questions and awakens a disquieting atmosphere that hints at unresolved mysteries embedded in the family’s past. Pauline Mylène Farmer takes her teenage daughters Beth and Vera to their recently deceased aunt Clarisse’s secluded home after they inherit it in her will. Beth reads an article about a string of home invasions where parents are murdered, but the children are spared. Unbeknownst to them, they are being stalked by a mysterious driver in a candy truck.
Shortly after they settle in, two intruders break in: a large, troubled man known as the Fat Man Rob Archer and a woman who drives the Candy Truck Kevin Power. Vera is raped by the Fat Man, while Beth tries to escape but is confronted by the Candy Truck Woman. When Beth asks what they want, the Candy Truck Woman answers, “We just wanna play with dolls.” Pauline reacts with swift, fatal force, killing both intruders.
Sixteen years pass. Beth becomes a successful horror author living in Chicago with her husband Adam Hurtig and her son Denis Cozzi. She appears on a talk show to promote Incident in a Ghostland, a novel inspired by that terrible night. Vera remains haunted, suffering delusions and living in a padded room in Clarisse’s house, where she still resides with Pauline. Beth starts having strange dreams, and Vera insists that their tormentors are still out there.
During a tense episode, Beth discovers Vera in chains, arranged to resemble a doll. Pauline calls an ambulance and warns Beth not to listen to Vera. Beth doses off, only to wake up in the hands of the Candy Truck Woman. She finds Vera badly injured in the basement, and the truth erupts: the Candy Truck Woman killed Pauline that night, and Beth and Vera have been reliving their teenage captivity in Clarisse’s house. Beth’s adult life, her career, and her marriage, appear to be a hallucination.
The Candy Truck Woman dresses Beth like a doll and leaves her in a room filled with other dolls while the Fat Man molests and tortures her. When he attacks Beth, she fights back and escapes, freeing Vera. They reach a road where two state troopers try to help, but the Candy Truck Woman shoots them and recaptures the sisters.
Beth retreats into her adulthood fantasy again, wandering a cocktail party where her idol, H.P. Lovecraft, praises her novel as a masterpiece. In the same moment, she sees Vera screaming for help and resolves to rescue her. Beth breaks free from the Fat Man and confronts the Candy Truck Woman in a climactic confrontation. A second state trooper arrives just in time to gun down both captors. As authorities arrive, Beth envisions her mother waving from the house, and she and Vera are taken to a hospital, finally bringing a fragile sense of relief after years of fear and confusion.

What Are the Themes of Ghostland?
3 ideas the story keeps returning to, among them Trauma, Reality vs Illusion and Family & Survival.
-
01
Trauma
The film centers on deeply rooted trauma from a brutal night, shaping both sisters’ identities and choices. Beth’s success as a writer is built on reliving and translating that horror into fiction. Vera’s ongoing delusions and fear underscore how unaddressed trauma can distort reality. The narrative uses memory, dream sequences, and violence to explore recovery and its limits.
-
02
Reality vs Illusion
A core twist reveals that much of Beth’s adulthood may be a projection of her traumatic experience. The line between what is real and what is imagined blurs as Beth navigates dreamlike scenes with Lovecraft and the nightmare in the basement. The film constantly shifts between the safe appearance of a successful life and the terrifying confinement of the dolls’ room.
-
03
Family & Survival
Despite the horrors, the siblings’ bond drives the action as they fight to escape and protect each other. Pauline’s maternal role contrasts with the intruders’ predatory threat, highlighting protection versus harm. The final confrontation and rescue underscore resilience and the long shadow trauma can cast on family dynamics.
