Kit arrives with General Fitts and the luau night begins

General Fitts visits the post with his daughter Kit, and Dick is tasked with driving her to a reception that evening. They slip away to a moonlit luau where Dick sings 'Aloha ‘Oe'. The pair are caught in each other’s arms by Scrapper and Kit’s admirer, Lieutenant Biddle.

Desertion edicts and Scrapper’s plea

Biddle accuses Dick of ruining Kit's reputation and pressuring her to accompany him off post. The accusation drives Dick toward desertion as a way to shield Kit from scandal. Scrapper begs Kit to reconcile with Biddle, hoping to avert heartbreak all around.

Kit explains her motive and spurs West Point bid

To stop Dick from deserting, Kit tells him she was acting on impulse and that he means nothing to her. Dick, stung by her words and by a condescending remark about being an officer and a gentleman, resolves to prove himself. In his first year, Dick earns the rank of first captain at West Point. General Fitts becomes the academy's superintendent, with Biddle as his aide. While many classmates pursue Kit, Dick remains emotionally cold toward her.

Dick resents the pressure on Kit to participate in the traditional 'Hundredth Night' theatrical production he must direct. The rehearsals strain their dynamic and foreshadow the complications of love and duty at the academy.

Dick writes a comedy and the Flirtation Walk moment

Dick composes a comedy about a female general with a pointed message for Kit. After the first rehearsal, Kit and Dick walk on Flirtation Walk, during which she tries to explain why she claimed not to be in love. They share a kiss during an on-stage love scene, and she finally admits she loves him.

As graduation nears, General Fitts announces Kit's engagement to Biddle. Dick is confused and unsettled by the news, unsure how to process his own evolving feelings and Kit's future.

Night visit and planned resignation

Dick visits Kit at night to try to dissuade her from marrying Biddle. He is caught by Biddle and, to protect Kit's name, agrees to resign from the academy. Scrapper comes to see him graduate and is disappointed by the resignation.

Resignation not accepted and the ring is returned

Biddle reveals that Dick's resignation was not accepted and that Kit has returned his ring, wishing him luck. The moment relieves tensions and clarifies their paths for the future, with Kit showing renewed affection for Dick.
