On April 25, 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan, made a controversial decision to alter its water supply, shifting from the reliable source of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department—known for its clean water sourced from Lake Huron and the Detroit River—to the potentially toxic Flint River, all in a bid to save money during the construction of the Karegnondi water pipeline. This transition was marked by a ceremony attended by Mayor Dayne Walling, who inaugurated the river’s water treatment facility, unaware of the dire consequences that would soon follow.

Shortly after the switch, residents began experiencing alarming health issues. LeeAnne Walters, a concerned mother, became acutely aware of her son’s inflamed skin rash, while Melissa Mays, a local disc jockey, faced a life-threatening seizure as she rushed her son to the hospital due to a persistent fever. As the situation unfolded, medical worker Adina Banks secretly brought her boyfriend Jake to her mother’s home, where they encountered discolored, reddish-brown tap water during their shower—a disturbing sign of contamination.

The initial signs of trouble culminated in an official notice dispatched to every Flint household, warning that the water quality was below the standards set by the Safe Drinking Water Act, urging residents to boil their water. Feeling alarmed, LeeAnne took action by attending a city council meeting in January 2015, voicing her concerns about the water quality. Unfortunately, her fears were dismissed by Jerry Ambrose, the Flint emergency manager, who merely suggested that the water was undergoing an “adjustment period.” Feeling frustrated and disheartened, LeeAnne was soon joined by activist Nayyirah Shariff, who asserted that a nine-month adjustment period was unacceptable.

As time went on, Melissa began to suffer from several serious health problems linked to the contaminated water, including osteoarthritis and liver cirrhosis. With growing anxiety, LeeAnne contacted city utility manager Mike Glascow to conduct water tests, which remarkably revealed that lead levels were seven times higher than the acceptable limit. Devastatingly, her son was subsequently diagnosed with lead poisoning. Meanwhile, Adina, who was four months pregnant with Jake’s child, would ultimately face heartbreak when she discovered during a routine medical appointment that she had miscarried.

In April 2015, another city council meeting was convened where a proposal was put forth to revert the water supply back to the safer sources of Lake Huron and the Detroit River. However, Ambrose’s veto escalated tensions as he cited budgetary constraints. The desperate trio of LeeAnne, Melissa, and Nayyirah began their own investigation and stumbled upon shocking public records that revealed vital corrosion control measures had ceased when the water supply switched to the Flint River.

Amid the chaos, Adina decided to investigate the connection between her miscarriage and the lead contamination, discreetly retrieving her bloodwork records to share with another doctor, Mona Hanna. Motivated by the trio’s efforts, Miguel Del Toral, an EPA agent, validated their claims and recommended seeking guidance from water corrosion specialist Marc Edwards at Virginia Tech. As public awareness of the crisis grew, a city hall meeting in July became a platform for residents to share further health-related issues stemming from the tainted water.

The turning point arrived when Iza, Adina’s mother, brought attention to her severe infected rash and the miscarriage of her grandchild, pressing the city government for accountability. Following this, Miguel attempted to alert his superiors about the situation, yet after being ignored, he leveraged the support of the American Civil Liberties Union to take further action.

To expose the lead problem, Edwards distributed 300 water testing kits throughout Flint, enabling residents like Adina to participate in the testing efforts. During this period, Jake returned and sought forgiveness from Adina as they faced the repercussions of the crisis together.

The test results ultimately confirmed that thousands of residents had indeed been exposed to dangerously high lead levels. In a decisive moment, Mona Hanna held a press conference revealing her findings regarding Adina’s hospital records. In reaction to mounting public pressure, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder proposed a plan to install water filters in homes and agreed to reconnect Flint to Detroit’s water supply.

It was later revealed that Glascow’s initial water testing results were discarded corruptly, a shocking revelation that contributed to the downfall of Mayor Walling, who claimed ignorance throughout the debacle. Defeated in his re-election bid, he, along with several government officials including Ambrose, faced charges due to their negligence, leading to the somber commencement of a long-term initiative to replace Flint’s corroded water pipes and begin the journey towards recovery.
