What Is Exit About?

The premise of Exit in 288 words, with nothing given away. The full story and the ending follow below.

In a near‑future Seoul, a strange white haze rolls over the city like a living veil, turning familiar streets into a precarious landscape where every breath could be a risk. The fog is silent but ominous, casting a pall over the bustling metropolis and forcing ordinary life into a tense, survival‑driven rhythm. The atmosphere crackles with a blend of urban grit and unsettling mystery, hinting at both physical danger and the psychological strain of a city caught in limbo.

Yong‑Nam is a former college rock‑climbing prodigy whose reputation now lives only in faded memories. Once celebrated for scaling impossible heights, he now finds himself adrift, living with his parents and wrestling with the expectations of a milestone birthday that feels more like a judgment. His talent for navigating vertical spaces remains, but it is buried beneath a layer of self‑doubt and the pressure to appear successful for his family’s sake.

Enter Eui‑Ju, an adventurous spirit whose own history is tied to the cliffs and crags Yong‑Nam once conquered. As his ex‑girlfriend, she carries both professional skill and a personal ledger of shared victories and unspoken regrets. Their reunion is charged with the awkward dance of past affection and present realities, each aware that the city’s airborne threat could demand more than just competence—it could require trust.

Together, they are drawn into a desperate effort to aid those stranded in the haze‑shrouded streets, their expertise in climbing and quick thinking becoming vital tools against an invisible enemy. The setting—a skyline of rooftops, precarious ledges, and crumbling structures—mirrors their own tentative climb back toward each other. Amid the looming danger, a glimmer of hope flickers, suggesting that confronting the white fog may also clear the path to a new beginning.

Spoilers ahead

Yong-nam, Jo Jung-suk, once stood among the best rock climbers in his college days, but today he’s a jobless adult living with his parents, scrambling to keep up appearances as his mother’s 70th birthday approaches. His older sister Jung-hyun, Ji-yeong Kim, pushes him to straighten up, while their mother Hyun-Ok, Du-shim Ko, hopes for a celebration that feels earned.

For the party, Yong-nam insists they celebrate at the Cloud Garden, secretly hoping to see his old crush and fellow ex-climber Eui-joo, Yoona. When he meets her, he pretends that he now has a successful career, a lie that catches her by surprise and seeds a strange tension between them.

Outside, a terrorist parks a truck near the Cloud Garden and releases a toxic white gas, sending the city into a panic. Eui-joo learns from a close friend, via phone, about Yong-nam’s fabrication of his life, which makes her more curious about the truth behind his bravado.

As the gas closes in, Yong-nam’s family rushes back toward the Cloud Garden, but Jung-hyun stumbles and is quickly overwhelmed by the toxic cloud. To reach safety together, they sprint to the roof, only to find the door barred. With quick thinking, Yong-nam shatters a window and uses a makeshift harness to scale the building, reaching the roof and opening the door so his family can escape.

On the roof, they raise crude SOS signals to attract a passing rescue helicopter. But Yong-nam and Eui-joo are kept off the gondola by the weight limit, forcing them to improvise. They wrap themselves in improvised safety gear and move to higher ground, seeking another route to safety. They locate a suitable building and signal to a second helicopter, but their attention is drawn to a group of students trapped in a nearby building. They redirect the helicopter toward the students, sacrificing their own chance at rescue for others.

A nearby gas station explodes, sending a wave of gas their way and pushing them to leave the building before help can reach them. Realizing that the only escape is to reach the tower crane—the highest point in the vicinity—they chase after a route across multiple buildings, guided by a drone that seems to be their only clue.

The drone eventually loses power, leaving them at a dead end. Yet the city’s drones converge on their location, and Yong-nam manages to suspend a rope across the gaps by using one of them. The two attempt to swing between buildings, but their combined weight proves too much for the drone, and they seem to fall to their deaths. Miraculously, they survive the fall and reach the tower crane, from which they are rescued by a helicopter.

Back on solid ground, Yong-nam tearfully reunites with his family. As he and Eui-joo face each other, they share a quiet, hopeful moment and agree to see one another again one day. Rain begins to descend, slowly washing away the last of the white gas that once cloaked the city.

Ending explained

How Does Exit End?

The last act of Exit and what it means, in 342 words. The ending lands as happy. Big spoilers: read the plot summary first if you have not seen it.

The final act, in full

The ending of French Exit reveals Frances’s quiet acceptance of her impending death. Throughout the film, she had repeatedly expressed her belief that she would die before the money ran out, and in her final moments, she indeed chooses to leave Paris, seemingly to her death. As she prepares to depart, she connects with her late husband’s spirit through a medium, revealing that the cat she believes is his reincarnation has been a link to him all along. This supernatural connection signifies her acknowledgment that her life is nearing its end, and her decision to leave is a way of embracing her mortality. Her departure into the Paris streets with the cat symbolizes her release from the material world and her acceptance of death, which she sees as the ultimate escape from her fears and struggles.

The flashback scenes show a deeper understanding of Frances’s past—her decision to kill her husband Franklin was her misguided attempt to protect her family from the emotional coldness and neglect she suffered in her marriage. Over time, Franklin’s detachment and cruelty pushed her to a breaking point, leading her to leave him to die when he had a stroke. This act of killing her husband was not with malice but driven by her desire to end his suffering and escape the toxic relationship. Her guilt is complicated, as she believes she did so out of love and self-preservation, which adds layers to her character’s emotional complexity.

Malcolm, her son, has idolized Franklin in his childhood but later recognizes his mother’s strength and sacrifices. The film ultimately emphasizes their bond—how Malcolm understands his mother’s actions and forgives her, seeing her as a heroine rather than a villain. Frances’s decision to leave Paris and her life behind signifies her final act of love and letting go—moving from the fear of death to acceptance, and understanding that her life, with all its pain and sacrifices, was a story of survival and sacrifice. Her quiet departure encapsulates her peaceful acceptance of the inevitable, making her exit both poignant and meaningful.
