Once upon a Halloween night, Kelly (/actor/mary-kate-olsen) and Lynn Farmer (/actor/ashley-olsen), a pair of seven-year-old twins, found themselves caught in a tale of magic, mystery, and family secrets. Their parents, Don (/actor/eric-mccormack) and Christine Farmer (/actor/kelli-fox), are struggling financially and desperately in debt, jeopardizing their home and stability. In their attempt to seek help, they visit Christine’s aunt, Aunt Agatha (/actor/cloris-leachman), a cold and stern woman living in a spooky mansion, hoping she might lend them some money. Their plea is rejected outright, leaving the girls feeling worried and uncertain.

While waiting outside the mansion, the twins encounter Wayne Robson (/actor/wayne-robson), who plays the grave digger, an enigmatic figure who shares with them a haunting tale. He recounts the story of Aunt Agatha’s twin sister, Sophia, also portrayed by Cloris Leachman, who was once close to Agatha but became her victim. The story reveals that their home was once owned by a powerful witch centuries ago. Before being executed by burning, this witch had hidden a moonstone, a rare and magical gem that granted her extraordinary powers.

The tale continues: as children, Agatha and Sophia, both tired of sharing their lives as twins, pursued the legend of the moonstone with hopes of breaking free from their identical appearances. Agatha discovered the gem, but instead of sharing it, she hid it and used its magic to torment her sister. The story takes a dark turn when, on a Halloween night, Sophia and her fiancé George (/actor/matthew-walker)—who was also Agatha’s butler—planned to elope. Out of jealousy, Agatha cast a sinister spell, banishing her sister into a mirror and trapping her in the netherworld, a curse that is set to become permanent if not broken within seven years.

Back at home, Kelly and Lynn learn about the spell and realize that Aunt Sophia might still be alive and could possibly offer help. Their hope ignites a daring plan: they aim to rescue her before the curse becomes eternal. The catch is that the spell can only be broken by twins who possess the moonstone, which Aunt Agatha always wears around her neck as a necklace. Determined, the girls devise a plan to acquire the gem, even if it means disguising themselves by swapping costumes with other trick-or-treaters. Their journey begins with help from a mysterious homeless man, Mr. N (/actor/meshach-taylor), who dreams of riches and stardom and offers his assistance. They also possess a toy magic wand, which appears to have genuine magical power—though it’s heavily implied that the twins’ own innate magical abilities are responsible.

The children then visit a phony psychic, Lulu, who is unable to locate the witches’ gathering, but the twins use their wand to find the secret location, setting out on their adventure. They hitch a ride on a pumpkin truck, eventually reaching a dark woods where a small, hidden house resides—home to Oscar (/actor/phil-fondacaro), a man longing to be taller. The twins share their story with him, and he agrees to join their quest. Meanwhile, Don and Christine realize their daughters have run off and notify the police, fearing for their safety.

Meanwhile, Aunt Agatha overhears the twins’ plan through her enchanted mirror and begins framing their rescue effort as a dangerous threat. She is terrified of the combined power of the twins, knowing that together they pose a formidable challenge. Kelly, Lynn, Mr. N, and Oscar infiltrate the witches’ gathering dressed in costumes, hoping to secretly retrieve the moonstone and confront Agatha. During the event, Agatha reveals the tragic story of her spell on her sister, exposing her jealousy and the lengths she went to in order to eliminate Sophia and claim her magic.

In a tense moment, the group manages to seize the moonstone, but Agatha quickly figures out their plan. She pursues them through the town, forcing the children to split up: Lynn, carrying the moonstone, teams up with Oscar, while Kelly stays with Mr. N. The chase concludes at an abandoned warehouse, where Mr. N confronts Agatha but is turned into a crow, leaving Kelly alone and vulnerable.

Later, Aunt Sophia appears, offering reassurance to Kelly that Lynn and Oscar have freed her from the curse. But Kelly quickly senses that her aunt’s appearance might be a trick—Aunt Agatha has transformed herself into Sophia’s likeness to trap her. She narrowly escapes George’s (the butler) grasp but is caught when she flees from the mansion. Meanwhile, Lynn seeks help from Mr. Gravedigger (/actor/wayne-robson), and together they find the police to aid their rescue.

As midnight approaches, the group locates the mirror in Agatha’s house where Sophia is hidden. Lynn hears her aunt crying out for help, and when she finds her, she faces the challenge of needing both twins and the moonstone to break the spell. The tension escalates when Agatha, accompanied by George, arrives, trying to manipulate Lynn into surrendering the moonstone. Lynn refuses, holding firm to her love for her sister. The twins then prepare for the final confrontation: Lynn places the moonstone down, but Agatha betrays her promise, threatening to turn everyone into animals. In the chaos, Mr. N swoops down in the form of a crow, snatches the gem, and distracts Agatha, allowing Kelly and Sophia to escape and break free.

The climax unfolds as the twins, with the help of their new friends, chant the magic incantation that comes from their hearts—“We love each other, and that’s all we need”—and successfully free Aunt Sophia. Agatha, furious and defeated, attempts to push her sister back into the mirror, but the twins resist and fight back with courage. Agatha falls into the mirror, which shatters, imprisoning her in the netherworld forever, and destroying her dark magic.

Their parents, Don and Christine, arrive to find Aunt Sophia safe and rejoined with her family. The story closes with everyone keeping the secret of the night’s events, while Aunt Sophia and George rekindle their love and refurbish the mansion into a warm family home. The twins express their gratitude to their friends, recognizing how much they’ve learned about friendship and bravery. The movie ends on a lighthearted note as the twins, while cleaning the attic, see Aunt Agatha in a shattered mirror fragment, asking for help—only for the twins to confidently refuse, walking away hand-in-hand, clutching the magical wand.
