Demonte Colony 2015

Raghavan, Sananth, Sajith, Abhishek Joseph, Vimal, Ramesh Thilak, and Srinivasan, Arulnithi, are four friends who share a cramped apartment in Chennai. On a rainy night after a heavy bout of drinking, they hatch a reckless plan to explore a dilapidated mansion in Demonte Colony, a place men and rumors alike whisper about. The air is thick with fear and curiosity as they sneak inside, the darkness swallowing them whole and forcing them to split up. Each of them encounters a spine-tingling, almost ritual encounter with the house, yet somehow they all manage to stumble back into the living world, shaken but seemingly unhurt.

The morning after, they seek answers from an astrologer, hoping to make sense of what they’ve felt and seen. Two of them have their thumbs read and future glimpses sketched out, while Sajith’s portion of the reading is left pending because he lacks the necessary paraphernalia. They return home, trying to pretend nothing is out of the ordinary, but the unease lingers. The tension thickens when Srini, while riding his bike, receives a cryptic call from the astrologer about something important that never fully comes through; the call is abruptly dropped just as Srini reaches the astrologer’s residence, only to discover the astrologer dead.

As the friends work to unpack the mystery behind the Demonte Colony, a backstory unfolds through a storyteller’s voice. Years ago, a Portuguese business magnate named John Demonte owned the area. He wished to gift his wife a precious necklace, but she spiraled into madness. Distraught, Demonte traveled to Calcutta and returned to India to sell off his properties, only to be confronted with a terrible truth: someone in the mansion had raped his wife, leaving her pregnant. Enraged and suspicious, Demonte murdered all his servants, a purge that angered the locals and led to a massive fire. The mansion exploded, taking Demonte and many others with it. A curse is said to have bound the diamond necklace to Demonte Colony, ensuring that whoever tries to steal it will be killed and that the necklace will always return to the colony.

Raghavan reveals a more intimate link to the necklace: he had stolen it to finance his own project. From that point on, eerie phenomena invade the friends’ apartment. A TV flickers with their own conversations instead of the disc they played, power cuts plunge the room into darkness, and the electricity board’s attempts to help are futile. Srini revisits the astrologer’s call, playing the recording that hinted Sajith had already died the previous night, even as Sajith himself sleeps unaware. The doors and windows refuse to yield, and the friends cry for aid that never reaches beyond their room. An Ouija board becomes a pivot for dread, answering questions that raise the chilling possibility that none of them will survive.

As the Ouija board burns, Sajith stirs, feigning oblivion and drifting back to sleep, a sight that fills the room with terror. Srini urges a reassembly of the group around the Ouija’s starting point, where the planchette ominously points toward Raghavan, whose voice fades and reveals that a vengeful spirit is tormenting him. Raghavan writes a chilling message on the TV predicting Demonte’s deadly return, and the foretold fate mirrors a violent day from the past as Vimal dies in the broadcast. Srini resolves that they do not know enough about the mansion’s history to trust their fate, and he vows to escape alive, even if it means facing the same fate that hunted the others.

Haunting pressures escalate until Srini himself is overtaken by the spirit. The room grows freezing cold, and a portion of the living space—where a god once resided—seems to be the key to escape. He recalls the DVD that might hold the answers, and, pushing past the terror, discovers a hidden doorway that opens to a path out. Sajith attempts to hinder him, but the truth— Sajith’s earlier death—rises to the surface, allowing Srini to slip away. He reaches a teashop outside, only to find that no one there can hear him. In a haunting twist, Srini realizes he has become a ghost, a departed observer of the Demonte Curse. The climax comes full circle as the necklace is seen being carried by Sajith, returning it to the Demonte Colony mansion, sealing the fate of the entangled friends and closing the loop on the whispered legend that binds the place to its cursed treasure.
