Annie, Zoé Leder and her little brother Johnny, Léonard Giovenazzo and their father Clifford, are on their way home from vacation when a tire blows out, forcing them to stop at a quiet rest area. While Clifford works on the tire, Johnny and Annie strike up a conversation with Josh, Victoria-Jeanne Pelletier, the stepson of their corrupt landlord Briggs. While wandering into the forest to retrieve their frisbee, they encounter Charlie McFadden, the bounty hunter who’s after the Critters. Before they leave, Charlie gives Johnny a crystal, telling him it will glow bright green when it’s >time to watch out for yourself and your family<. Meanwhile, an unseen Critter lays eggs beneath the family’s van and, unaware, they hit the road with the eggs still aboard.

Soon after they arrive at their tenement, the Critters hatch and sneak into the basement, where they kill the sleazy maintenance man, Frank, Mathieu Dufort. When Rosalie, Joëlle Boily goes down to the basement, she is attacked by the Critters before being rescued by Annie. Meanwhile, Briggs arrives at the tenement to evict the residents, with Josh reluctantly accompanying him. When Briggs enters a room with Critters inside, Josh, having grown distasteful of his stepfather, shuts the door, unintentionally trapping him with the Critters, who then attack and kill him.

Next, one of the residents is attacked and wounded. Annie, her family and five others (including Josh) try to get to safety in one piece by getting to the roof of the building. Charlie arrives and destroys the remaining Critters, saving the remaining tenants. The film ends in a cliffhanger as Charlie is about to destroy the last two Critter eggs, but is ordered not to and a containment pod sent from the Intergalactic Council crashes into the basement.

Critter Spoiler-Free Summary

Discover the spoiler-free summary of Critter (2023). Get a concise overview without any spoilers.

In a cramped city where the ordinary is constantly brushed aside by the uncanny, a young woman named Annabelle returns home to find that her sister, Frédérique, has formed a curious bond with an odd, otherworldly creature. The discovery triggers a fierce, almost obsessive jealousy in Annabelle, setting the tone for a tense family drama that hums with the electric static of something far stranger lurking just beneath the surface of everyday life.

The siblings’ uneasy relationship is framed against a backdrop of cramped apartments, dimly lit hallways, and the ever‑present hum of a world that seems to be holding its breath. Annabelle’s fixation on the beast becomes a mirror for deeper insecurities, as she grapples with the fear of being eclipsed by a creature she can’t quite understand. The house itself feels like a micro‑cosmos where ordinary concerns—rent, chores, sibling rivalry—are amplified by the presence of the unknown.

Beyond the sisters’ quarrel, the city hints at larger mysteries. A lone bounty hunter drifts through the streets, his purpose shrouded in secrecy, while unseen forces—perhaps even intergalactic—watch from the shadows. The atmosphere is a blend of gritty realism and speculative unease, where every flicker of light could be a warning, and every creak in the walls might signal an unseen presence drawing nearer.

As the tension builds, Annabelle’s obsession pushes her toward a path that could either unravel the fragile balance of her family or plunge her deeper into an unsettling world where the line between human and beast blurs. The story lingers on the edge of revelation, inviting the audience to wonder what lies hidden in the corners of a city that refuses to be ordinary.
