Kevin, a lazy and selfish music composer, is a father who is divorced from his wife Jill, but still feels obligated to join her family for Christmas, especially Jill’s father Arthur, a man who never fully warmed to him. While racing to buy a last-minute gift for his son, Kevin purchases something he doesn’t even bother to inspect. He arrives at Jill’s family’s home to a mixed reception, greeted most warmly by his son Ben and Jill’s stern grandmother, Granny Conlon.
