Determined to test her sincerity, he chooses to wait a full month before moving on, believing that an ultimatum can help clarify their situation. As a sentimental gesture, he begins purchasing a tin of pineapples every day, all bearing the expiration date of May 1st. This date holds significance for him, as it is not only his birthday but also a favorite fruit of May’s. Therefore, if she hasn’t returned by the time he reaches 30 cans, he will take it as a sign their relationship has truly expired.

Meanwhile, a mystery woman adorned with a striking blonde wig is maneuvering through the treacherous landscape of the drug underworld. After a smuggling deal goes awry, she’s left to navigate a life of danger and deception.

On May 1st, Zhi Wu unexpectedly encounters the woman at the Bottoms Up Club. Weary and drained, she falls asleep in his presence in a hotel room while Zhi Wu takes the opportunity to watch television and order some food. In an act of unexpected kindness, he polishes her shoes before departing, leaving her to rest. The next morning, she awakens with a newfound resolve and confronts the drug baron responsible for her troubles.

Following his morning jog, Zhi Wu receives a message from the mystery woman on his pager, extending birthday wishes to him. He continues his daily routine and visits a food store located within the bustling Chungking Mansions, where he bumps into a new staff member, Faye.

Meanwhile, another police officer known as Cop 663 is grappling with his own romantic woes, dealing with the fallout from his relationship with a flight attendant. Unbeknownst to him, Faye is harboring feelings for him. When the flight attendant comes to the food store, she leaves behind a letter for Cop 663, as she mistakenly believes he is working that day, along with a set of keys to his apartment.

Faye, seizing the opportunity, informs the officer about the letter, yet he procrastinates in reading it and asks the store’s owner to keep it for him. In a bid to cheer him up, Faye secretly starts using the keys to clean and redecorate his apartment. As the days go by, their bond strengthens, leading to the officer realizing Faye’s affection for him. He plans a date at a restaurant named California, but unexpectedly, Faye doesn’t show up. The store owner, who is also Faye’s cousin, visits the restaurant to reveal that Faye has decided to move to California. She leaves behind a boarding pass, sketched on a paper napkin, marking her departure a year later.
